Just made my complaint to the BBC. Used up all the characters available, and that wasn't enough LOL

Now I've got his sinking feeling in my stomach as I prepare for Simmons' imminent commentary on the 470 Medal races.

(Nice to hear mention of expected Weymouth sailing conditions on the Radio 4 weather bulletin earlier this morning)

LOL love it!
especially including my favoured method for disposal- note that it is merely "towards" France, the range doesn't have to be good enough to get him there. Mid channel is fine.

Dear Mr Fuller

Thank you for contacting us about our coverage of the London 2012 Olympics and in particular those t**sers we used for the sailing stuff.

We are receiving a variety of feedback including complaints, appreciations, enquiries and comments with many differing views or observations about numerous aspects of the coverage, including which teams are not covered or particular comments made by commentators or other contributors. We are reporting this feedback in detail daily to our producers and other staff covering the games, and are grateful for your reaction because it is helpful in shaping the coverage. However in order to use licence fee resources appropriately, we regret we cannot offer to address each individual point and are sending this reply to many of those who have contacted us.

Olympic Broadcast Services (OBS) have been appointed by London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the host broadcaster to provide feeds for all broadcasters including the BBC. The BBC uses feeds provided by OBS along with our own coverage to provide the best coverage we can for viewers and listeners across the UK. We refer to Team GB in our coverage, as an accepted abbreviation of “Great Britain and Northern Ireland”, since this is the name adopted by the British Olympic Association to represent the competing nations within the United Kingdom.

The coverage of London 2012 is a huge logistical task, with many changes being made to the planned scheduling of events. The context is that we are making every Olympic sport available and therefore providing extensive coverage across our TV and radio stations as well as online and through the red button, mobile and tablet devices. Given this, we realise some aspects of the scheduling or commentary have not satisfied everyone and are sorry when any technical or factual errors occur.

We are of course ensuring that we report all the reaction to our producers and managers as soon as possible and we investigate possible breaches of editorial guidelines. Roger Mosey is the BBC’s director of London 2012 and is regularly responding to issues on Twitter @rogermosey, supported by blogs from senior BBC figures as appropriate at www.bbc.co.uk/blogs.

He has been tasked with the job of removing them from the air please indicate your preferred method of disposal.

1)Hung by yard arm

2)Fired from Canon towards France (preferred option)

3)Made to attend and commentate upon Y&Y Forum Funday Regatta, with tar & feather accompaniment

Thank you again for contacting us.

Kind Regards

The sailing commentary is like most of the weather forecasting commentaries - dumbed down. Richard Simmons is abysmal. I got so fed up with him referring to "the Danish sailor" during the Finn racing. What about "the Dane" the "Aussie" "the Kiwi"etc? Shirley referred to "the Dane". And of course "the Finn" lol! And he made out that Ainslie was the only one who had figured out that pumping the sail energetically on a run was a key technique, like it was something he had sprung on the other competitors.
I thought Leigh MacMillan tried to get a bit technical now and again and it began to get interesting sometimes, but I suspect he was told to shut up and keep it dumbed down.
And Simmons kept referring to the wind "ricocheting" off sails to the detriment of nearby boats - that is SO misleading. This could have been a fantastic chance for the BBC to educate folk and excite their interest in sailing if they had bothered. There were some text book examples of "lee-bowing" eg http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/2012/live-video/p00w2yhm - watch for about a minute from 03:27:00 where someone could have explained that the wind is deflected and slowed to the disadvantage of the other boat; it doesn't "ricochet".
They did refer to "dirty" wind often, but failed to explain the difference between lee-bowing dirtiness and blanketing on a run dirtiness.
I didn't once hear a commentator explain the way air must flow evenly on both sides when on the wind, how a sail works like a aircraft wing, and how in a gust the apparent wind shifts slightly, hence the need to be constantly changing course and trimming the sails; no they just referred to wind shifts and the "better" side of the course. They could have explained a lift and a header.
Not once did I hear mention of tidal current and it's influence.
Not once did I see a 3D image of the land in the vicinity, with current average wind speed and direction, and how the land can affect it.
Sailing is unique in that conditions change hugely, and can't be forecast, and the commentary should reflect that.
The BBC TV weather forecasters often ignored conditions at Weymouth - especially today where the forecast was for light variable winds, so a great chance to mention "sea-breeze" - but no, just the usual dumbing-down.

It has been removed from Vimeo due to a complaint from the IOC, here's the response from Francis Higgins (NSFW)

My sister doesn't sail but lives in Weymouth so is interested in the event.  Clearly the commentary isn't working as here is her fb post with her impression of the match racing:

"Think it was the 'Looby Lou' race. There's two sail boats for the girls, and they set off and two boats with motors start chasing them (of course the chaps bagged the speed boats). The chaps on the speed boats have to keep one hand behind their back to make it fair. BUT they also have a flag called a Looby Lou, and when they decide to wave it everyone has to go round in circles singing 'Here we go Looby Lou, here we go Looby Light, Here we go Looby Lou, all on a Saturday night'. Then they all go into the middle and play rock, paper, string to see who gets another go tomorrow. Simples"

It's got to be said that Mrs P thinks the commentary is okay.

Loved Barry Davies' commentary on the hockey yesterday. Superb.
