well the only thing I can say is that my 60 year old father in law has asked me to buy a 49er so he have a go at that dangling thing..... the reason being he says it looks a lot easier than all that energetic work on the 'boats that still look like boats', I can only assume he means Ben Ainslie pumping 50 shades of sh1t out of Rita...

The Simmonds trait that winds my son (13) up most.......

........ Is the way he leaves massive gaps in the the middle.....

........of his sentences.

Like Rodney, I wonder if we're being a little harsh in some respects, if the non- sailors are finding it useful.

Yes, and Bootscooter thought the diving commentary was great, but perhaps diving experts were threatening to punch their TVs too!

Sailing is one of the most complicated sports to watch and, face it, fairly dull to watch for the un-initiated. the commentators will always be up against it

This is perhaps the worst bit- good TV sport commentators don't talk constantly; the verbal diarrhoea approach is something that's rather come from Sky Sports football coverage. The old school commentators such as Barry Davies are rather more reserved

Andy Green or Mark Chisnell, either would do a much more constructive job.

Anyone on the Nothe's probably heard Andy's commentary style over the last week or so, and for Mark then watch some of the WMRT stuff (e.g. monsoon cup last year) - informative, accurate and explanational rather than being patronizing.

I also don't get the "need to always be talking" which simmonds seems to be injected with - sometimes he's so busy waffling he doesn't get the chance to actually talk about the critical point (e.g. Finn MR NED hitting NZL).

As for bringing it to the 'footie fan' - did I ever hear an explanation of what a windshift was or why splitting to the other side of the course from the opponent was dangerous? However I did quite like Leigh McMillan and his explanation of apparent wind in one of the races was fantastic

So for 2016 team up Andy or Mark with Leigh for the commentary/ Keep shirley for the 'piece to camera bit' and dump Simmons and Rob Walker and his 'schoolboy' style post match interivews...

Sorry mate but it appears you know as much as Simmonds et al as to what is acceptable to the majority of sailing enthusiasts when it comes to sailing commentary.

Marvellous....roll on the beeb for us mere mortals who enjoy a bit of sailing;) Wink

Anyway - could've been worse. At least the IOC hasn't yet worked out a way of jazzing up the courses with a bit of artificial colour! Have you tried watching the hockey......?
