I still reckon the best compromise is a 9 race series with one discard, and then a single day with 4 short races that count double. So the final day is worth exactly half the result. Reduce it to the top 10 if you want, doesn't really matter. The important thing is that this way, going in to that last day EVERYONE involved is still in with a chance of a medal. It seems obvious to me that if you are racing in a medal race you should have a mathemtaical chance of winning a medal. The clue is in the name!

FYI the windsurfer dude was good enough to win the medal race as well! the cream always comes to the top.....

I was starting to eat my initial words after the Finn and Star medal races, in which the presence of a third contender kept the top two more honest (less match-racy) than they might otherwise have been. But the men's Laser brought me back to my original objections.  I was upset on behalf of the Cypriot, even if I was quite happy to see an Aussie win the series.

maybe we should have fleet racing that weeds out the lower rankngs as the week goes on then have two races at the end of the week, match race for 3rd and 4th and again for the final, based on your fleet racing score.  that way you know who has won and the so the general public knows whats going on and the commentators do not have keep explaining it over and over and over again.

Match racing puts too much emphasis on rules and boat handling.  I'd rather reward the fastest sailor.

could rule it like the cycling, perhaps up to the last lap have match racing then flat out sprint, best of 3.

Enforcing a 'flat out / no match racing' rule would be almost impossible without separation lanes, which then brings in the potential for advantage one side or t'other. Even if the leader were allowed to choose his side, it would still be an uneven playing field. Just my 2d.

Intriguing concept.  Not sure how you'd arrange for the sprint, tho'.  Surely the guy in front would just continue match racing?  

Ideally, I'd like to see something akin to cycling time trial; totally impossible tho', since each competitor would get a different wind.  The closest we mere mere mortals get is one-of-kind handicap racing, but don't let's go there...

no match racing tactics allowed after last mark, including putting in a cover tack, leader at last mark has advantage as they determine side of course to go on.
