if you look at the results across the various D-one events I'd suggest that it's not a fat boy's boat, it seems to have a sailor weight similar to the laser. obviously lardy types can sail them very well indeed but it's not the preserve of the fatties the way the finn and phantom (and 10.2 100) are...
amazing though they are i don't see moths being suitable, primarily for the lack of geographical spread. you could make a good argument for a switch from heavyweight hiker to singlehanded asy skiff and bring in the MPS which would bring a great test of sailor skill but would it be as tough tactically? has anyone really enjoyed watching the 49er racing this week? it's been impressive boathandling (usually) but often dull racing, not something you could level at the finns.

I agree - the 49'er racing is boring as hell. No doubt it's spectacular for the non-sailor watching ("Strewth, Doris - look how fast they can go! - Oh dear, they've fallen in!"), but essentially you sail the thing like a cat; fast-track it out to the layline, bang in a tack and go for the mark. The lovely old FD that it replaced provided much more interesting racing. But there you go, it looks good on TV; it's got coloured sails, goes fast and falls over at regular intervals. Just one more reason why we should educate the media types instead of carping at the coverage.
I think the Finn coverage has been very good, and Ben's little tactical excursion today was explained simply enough to demonstrate to the non-sailing viewers that there is more to sailboat racing than just going fast. Hopefully some will watch future coverage with a slightly more critical eye, and might even schlep down to their local sailing club... Edited by Sheetpuller - 03 Aug 12 at 5:59pm |

I'm not arguing. I'm explaining why I'm right.

Is a foiling Moth race good to watch for the tactics? They might be good in the Olympics if they had a time trial event...(Got to be better than match racing) but not on a no wind day!

Thank you for pointing that out sheet puller, that is good news, the best use for those I've seen is an ornamental garden. I'm watching a programme on the New Forest at the moment and they are making charcoal, that could be another useful purpose for an OK, OK? As to foiling moths, I watched a couple of good races video'd in the Gorge last summer or the summer before last, very exciting, picking the shifts downwind seemed to be pretty critical.

All this talk of boats for big guys. What about all us wee smurfs? They have different weights in the rowing how about the same for sailing. Anything better than a radial or Europe?

It has all been said before on here Cameron but it is hard to be competative on the sea if you are under 13 stone in a laser full rig or less than say 11 stone in a radial. Where does that leave the average sailor, male or female who wishes to sail single handed?
Come on IOC look again at the Byte C2 and give the girls/smaller men a chance, just think how cool they would look skipping accross Weymouth bay. See favourite photo page. Mind you we would then give all those diminutive chaps from the far east a chance! |

If you want a good UK open meeting circuit for the generously proportioned the Phantom is a good call.
If you have the money and the time and fancy some cracking european sailing then the Finn is the boat to go for. On looks the Finn winds hand down, though that blooming great bit of tine in the middle does looks a bit odd.

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

Just back from a week at Weymouth so I'm pleased to see this thread. I've been sailing Finns on and off since I was 16 and now, 38 years later I own 2. I'm the heaviest I've ever been at 82kg and I've never been uncompetitive, even without a fully matched rig. My 49 year old wooden Finn isn't going onto a bonfire to suit GRF but continues to do well in club handicap fleets on the modern handicap, sails in Classic events and also keeps up with the back of the fleet at major Finn events. My new (to me) Devoti Finn cost me less than a new Laser and is considerably faster. With a carbon mast, double bottom and mylar sails it's an absolute bargain. So all of you tempted by the TV coverage, just go out and get a Finn!

In the interests of fairness though, it must be said that BA has re-iterated today that he 'wasn't joking' when he said that sailing a Finn was killing him. Apparently he had a helicopter on standby at one point too, ready to take him to hospital.
A quick estimate is that in 12kts of wind, each of those pumps is equivalent to pulling 30kg! Lovely looking boats though. |
