what I hate is the way the velcro on the knee pads tries to mate with any other form of 'hook and loop' fastening I'm wearing. Sailing kit seems to excel in this.

Whatever gave you that idea? Cool stuff D30, british invention, what isn't cool is some idiot brands like Mystic Kiteboarding (AKA Magic Marine) using it on footpads for their boards purely for marketing reasons, total misuse as an application. (It hardens on impact so landing from a big jump when you expect your pads to absorb the shock, they go hard, not cool.). Protection was what it was made for, so great for articulation, then hardens on impact, the problem is recognising it still needs absorption support or it will be the same as having something hard next to your joint, so the trick is in spotting how it's used and how well they still protect you from the impact shock.

ahh... cool, thanks for the insight.
btw- I found the d30 knee pads (and elbow pads) great for boarding, but what I didn't like was the Burton (R.E.D.) D3O impact shorts. I've switched to another brand now, a British made one, Forcefield Body Armour: |

shin pads are neccessary in some boats, I often thought elbow pads would have come in handy when trimming on lead-mines too, seems to be no shortage of stuff to crack your not-so-funny-bone on when winding on

Yes, plenty of girl crews who dont like the look of having bruised shins. There must be a market for them as Rooster sell them!

Cool, I thought it was only me that suffered! It's not the look, you understand, so much as the pain. Oh, the pain.
Still, I think I might just wear some footie pads over the top of the wetsuit rather than Rooster ones underneath - might look like a storm trooper! |

I remember a few years ago seeing Vortex sailors wearing full-on paintball style shin and knee guards.
It didn't do much for the image of the boat tbh
