I have since buying the boat new not yet managed to drag myself down south to race against other 100's as buying the boat coincided with kids. Hence all my experience with the 100 is club racing or regattas up North.
I was wondering given the fact the PY is the same for all rigs if that means I could swap rigs depending on the conditions. As it happens I only have the 8.4 rig but I would be tempted to buy the baby sail for howlers if I thought I could use it as the PY is the same.

Well I no longer have a dog in the race, but to my mind the easiest and simplest solution was always to de-ristrict the entire concept- one class, one fleet, two, sorry, three rig choices... it's the reason I didn't protest rig switchers at the first nationals, I'd rather have another boat to race against and tbh, when fleet racing I rarely even clocked who was riding with what rig, maybe it's changed a bit since then, especially now the more obvious variation exists with the 7.4 and 10.2?

Free choice at every level is the simplest for everyone to get their head around on and off the race course, besides in practice not many sailors will be arsed to change at lunchtime and races tend to be back-to-back anyway.

It would do away with the PY confusion as well, but that's a separate point,  but yet again RS100 talk focuses on circuit sailing and not the club racing most of us bought the boats for in the first place.

The issue with swapping down is that you get the drag reduction as well, potentially offering a performance improvement as well as survivability. As to the general rig swapping concept would you have to declare before the championship? Not sure how it would work if half the fleet changed rigs in the middle of the event and suddenly all the 'non-swappers' scores DNFs etc etc etc would need adjusted for fleet size and the scoring of races where different parts of the fleet were included and others not and so forth.

I haven't read the proposals mind so all of this could be dealt with and I'm just being silly.

How do you determine who is in the running for the chocolates? Do you pre-declare it, or wait until the final day, or after the 5th race??

It was blowing a two to three with puffs from the East with sunshine,
about as benign conditions as Hythe delivers, a fabulous day. Ruined only
by bending to do something stupid and putting my back out, still not to
worry.

I could wax poetical about if for reams, but in brief it's exactly what I
want in a boat, everything is exactly where you want it, there are so many
extra nice touches, the slot flusher what a cool idea that is, the mast
being foam filled, it's even got bits of string under the gunwhales against
the day it falls over. A truly well sorted boat, well balanced, lively if you're
doing it wrong then you do it right you know instantly, very input is
rewarded, every mistake is punished however so it's not a beginners tool.
There's no way I'd appreciate this if I hadn't trodden the path I have with
all those other boats, it feels like a reward for all that effort, almost feels
like a boat made just for me..

Found myself getting flash, spinnaker running it in close to the beach and
gybing round one of the T15 buoys with the kite up, damn how easy is
that without a forestay, almost self gybing spinnaker. Then nearly hitting
the rock groin cos i can't hold it to high so had to do and emergency
drop, which is a piece of cake.

Hoist and drop can both be done either holding onto the wiggle stick
(carbon indeed) or doing the Musto knee bent shuffle (quicker), only fault
I found, during a gybe I slipped back into the boat on a shiney bit, that
will get some bling stomp traction addition in due course.

All in all I love it love it love it, totally dialed at this point one could
almost say flawless, but I dare say I'll find something, but not today.

funny old read this thread  LOL

I know that I'm not part of the class nor have I sailed one, but I do think that you might have a good point to this rig swapping idea, to a point. I think that you would be better off saying that you can only swop down from your declared rig, which means that people can depower once it gets a little windy. swoping up just seems a little counter intuitive if there are no prizes to be had. also unfair on the heavier sailors that can't go to a 12m rig, etc. These people could then get in the way of those not swopping (especially those going to 10.2 on those remaining in the 8) and affect their results, wait for the protests for redress on that one. it is less likely that someone swopping down would do this.
Everything I say is my opinion, honest

Funnily enough i think it was early in the life of this thread i suggested that you do this.  It was never going to work with the poor definition between the 8.4 and 10.2 rigs that you get a proper bonified split PY.  So i think its great for the 100 to have the ability to swap.  The 10.2 is a realy light wind bandit but i can imagine it to be bloody hard work in a decent breeze on any kind of lumpy (or even flat) stuff.  The 8.4 looked hard enough to me at POSH!  I guess then you can have the best of both worlds.  The only negative i can see is that the 100 will be quicker in all conditions and would almost certainly drive the PY down further.  Imagine those lightweight skimmers in a 10.2 in a nice Wednesday night breeze.  But, as has been mentioned before this sport is all about compromise, so if the compromise is you drop the PY for a more versityle ride then so be it.

Interesting debate about allowing windy-day rig change-downs at future nationals but only for those not shooting for the prizes now running on the new RS100 website

Have your say 100 owners who ducked out this year (missing some great sailing, craic, crazy golf and go-karting)

Not sure I need any leading astray, I can normally take care of that myself!!

Cheers Andrew, we wont mention Saturday and becoming captain splash.

Interesting points about the spreaders, I actually have mine quite long. I suspect that it does make a difference when sailing upwind in strong breeze, especially as the windward one seams to be tight
