Would I buy 3DL, probably not as they are so new that there is no proof yet that they will last 25% longer to justify the cost.

The list price of the Merlin 3DL main was 1200 +vat. Thats near as damn it 100% more expensive. I notice it's now come down to £1085. A HD main is £784 in vat

Granted they should last better, but i still feel i'd rather have two new sails.

And to think there is a perception that sailing is an expensive sport for well off people...

thats not expensive when you consider a ticket to a football match is 40 quid, and then the sky sports subscription to see all the other and the latest kit,

a new suit of sails is far cheaper than most football club season tickets, infact i bet that if you total your average yearly spend on sails, running costs, club fees etc it is still cheaper than being a football fanboy with the added bonus that you are actually getting some exercise rather than just shouting at some overpaid plonker chasing a ball around a field.

Far be it for me to be a football apologist, but in the interest of fairness it is worth pointing out that the average adult premier league season ticket is less than £500 and the most expensive at Manchester United is less than £1000.

At the risk of going OT, I saw a Laser Radial sail this weekend with a Hyde logo. I thought Hyde made the genuine sail, but with a Laser logo? Are Hyde now making replica sails as well as the real thing?!

Watching football has become a bit of a middle class pastime, too, from what I understand, with season ticket prices regularly being complained about in the sports pages pre-season.

The rumours I have heard is that Hyde are no longer producing Laser sails for Laser, possibly due to non payment by Laser Performance.

There is also a new design of Laser sail imminent which accounts for the lack of current supply of full rig sails too.

Hyde may have old or unpaid for stock sitting around and decided to sell it off.....can't say I blame them!

Interestingly both the quality and the performance of their windsurfing sails improved after he left, whilst arguably he still makes tough windsurfing sails these days, the performance is an acquired taste (I wouldn't use one personally) but as I said, don't teint the North Brand name with Ezzys sour grapes and shenanigans.

Their US operation is an enviable development house and their quality has always been reasonable imv, not that I have any love for them, one of their kites (from the German licensee) actually killed me for a few minutes and I still compete with them, I just wouldn't want their sailing arm's name besmirched by their dodgy European license holders.

I'm sure there's 2 sides to a story, but out their in litigation lala land this site would have been shutdown without just cause.... anyway as for north dinghy sails, yep always thought them step up in quality than - just compare the D1 sails with the RS offerings, however neither hold a candle to a well built, potentially customised, domestic product IMO - if you sail a class with free sail choice I really don't know why you wouldn't use a local sailmaker- HD, P&B, Alverbanks, Dynamic etc so many good professionals, we're spoilt for choice, and they can build cheaper versions too!
