Shrouds are only really there to keep the mast in the boat with the kite up.

no I just assumed they meant setting the standard spreaders to their longest setting

I have been advised that it's a good idea to lengthen the spreaders on the RS100 to reduce/eliminate sideways mast bend. I haven't tried it yet. 

Is this a good idea or will it remove any gust response?
