Couple of years ago? Ask me how I felt after losing one of those stupid wire cir clip things they use everywhere last night, or that the chain plates were once again different hole dimension to my two different fast pins. 'They' do it for their supposed competitive advantage and give the bloody chandleries a bit more of a meagre income from our sadness. Dinghy 'fittings' in general are a total farce, there are too many different scu's for any local dinghy shop to stock, none of them work with other brands, yet there are no clear markings or product ID other than the occasional 316 stamped as a lie on a bit of rusting stainless shackle. I swear even in the short time I've been involved which is coming up 8 years now, the quality has degraded, 'they' are probably getting 'scalped' by China and don't even know it yet. They put their string in front of the spinnaker chute instead of one top of it, they don't match their mast curve to their sails, no-ones spotted that you don't actually have to have a great long boom if you fully batten the sail, the gnav thing isn't always married to the appropriate controls to stop the sail flattening, round pegs in square holes.. do I need to rant on? The whole shambles is such a joke you couldn't even make it up if you wanted to paint a picture of total random chaos in product supply to a market. Never mind educating the market to the point even the average none sailor would have the first idea..

I'm not done with this yet, the tenor of the conversation here sounds like it's all over and a waste of time and resin which it isn't.
We haven't even talked about V 3 yet.. ![]() The EPS is my wednesday afternoon bunk off down the lake diversion, the quality of the actual racing appears better there than recently we've experienced at Hythe with our tiny one sided beats and reaches that favour Contenders and other kite less diversions from the path of true righteousness. And don't forget like tonight, it's sunny warm 'n windy and I'll be out proper racing on the purest form of sail racing there is..

From the OP- honestly, it's not funny. At least you gave it a go... now get out there and tell us all what a travesty it was the EPS flopped under the weight of competition/lack of marketing clout. |

What Rupert, create his own lipstick class? Of course the benefit of a lipstick class is some other bugger has gone through the 'arsing around' phase for you and you can just get on with taking part in the good fleet racing that such proccesses can deliver.
Maybe if new & funky must be on the agenda, (god knows why, they're just dinghies FFS) perhaps the passion & enthusiasm would be better channelled into the groundswell of something like the Farr 3.7 Project- make sure they don't tie themselves up in rules and regulations before the 'class' even kicks off for example. |

... is there a buggy out there today in deepest Kent ... you know surrounded by a wide range of chewed up and discarded toys ...?
![]() I'd get it out of the sun and just go sailing quick .... A bad day in the 'whatever' crappy old dinghy design (that works) is better than a good day in the office / pram perhaps dreaming about that 'perfect' alternative that 'those idiots' cannot already see. Dream on .... Seriously though take the positives out of it - you learnt a great deal (if not humility!) and did what so few will ever do, gaining satisfaction in the process perhaps - No not many will ever develop and build a new whatsit, .... and provided the nearest thing to a 'boat development soap' this forum has ever witnessed. The boat than just sails up onto the beach without your weight in it and is picked up by your friends.
This method also works with lots of other boats including RS400s. Luckily there are no Wayfarers at our club. Very little damage is done to the boats or people. Landing on your own can be done but your have to be quick.
Our beach is actually very small stones and they act a bit like ball bearings when mixed with water. The club have sailed there for over 50 years and have learned to live with the beach.

The design and build ideas I was referring to weren't really for the big stuff - you have made it quite clear that neither old designs or the current crop of new designs are what you like, so the big stuff you'll have to come up with yourself - but the little stuff; why boats have string where they do, why sails are cut as they are, rather than windsurfer style, why some fittings are made as they are. Things that a couple of years ago you would rant about for hours, but now maybe, just maybe, you can see might work?
The trouble I can see is that you rather like the all round abilily of some of the older designs, but because they are old, and heavy, they don't tick the boxes. Faster more modern designs are faster because less compromise has been made for seaworthyness, so they become harder to sail, and are therefore branded impossible. Your design is a fantastic attempt at a "third way" as Blair liked to put it. I do wonder, though, whether you'd have been better off going the Alt0 route - choosing a proven design, experimenting with it, lightening it, but always having a benchmark with which to compare the changes. |

No I suspected that the buying trend had probably shifted from that particular builder..
Then a Phantom's hardly on my wish list, nice boat that it is.. Edited by G.R.F. - 22 May 12 at 12:21pm |

Hi Grf
if you look at the Phantom website there are pictures of little monsters New Ovington hull being fitted out by James Jarvey, also in the photos section some new boats are seen with numbers over 1400. Not many I admit but still a few trickling in so your source is not correct. |
