Has the V Twin been rebranded V2?
Seems obvious if you design a very stable craft when sailing it will also be very stabe upside down representing a major problem. Cat sailors have been aware of this for some time ... Why not just develop your motor skills a bit such that you can cope with a less stable craft which may be more prone to capsize but at least you can self rescue.

All boats will tip over sooner or later.
Small boats will tip over more frequently than large boats. Un-ballasted boats will tip over more frequently than ballasted boats. One of he major innovations of the 1960s was the self rescuing dinghy, which allowed the crew to continue sailing after a capsize. At that time the hydrostatics of a dinghy when capsized became part of the designers prevue. But it hasn't really been given much attention. V twin is an example of thinking half way through the problem. This stuff really isn't rocket surgery. IF you want the boat not to invert, it has to be stable in the attitude of rig in the water. Stability requires the center of gravity to be aligned with the center of buoyancy. In practical term, this requires the rig to float. Most modern beach cats have sealed masts, which when combined with the over rotating wing mast is buoyant enough to prevent inversion. Some of my recent ICs have had sealed masts as a side benefit of of getting rid of the main halyard, these boats are far less likely to go turtle than ones with big holes in the masthead. I also designed very neat foam filled square heads for mainsails that may actually be better aerodynamically that a regular pin head but also have enough volume to prevent inversion. Just mentioning it. SHC |

it makes an excellent swimming platform to dive off, I suspect if ever it happens again this coming summer I shall have young girls swarming to it in their bikinis just to sunbath and enjoy water sport...
Sounds perfect - why would you want to change anything?

No I hadn't, I've got the downhill er cunnigham out there which provides additional security to keep them in place, I hadn't thought of the jib, which actually makes more sense and why didn't I think of that.. I'm going to go down the boat park right now and fix it. Thanks Owen. What I really wanted to achieve and was going about it cack handedly, was the arrangement the swift solo has, but I just can't figure how it's done, pulleys, blocks.. never really been my thing...

Have you thought about doing a self tacking jib with control lines lead out onto the wings so that you can adjust it? this way you would only have to concentrate on the mian.

The Tunnel is open all along its top edge where the centreboard retracts, no suction, the only issue is with the huge wetted area in low wind, pretty standard for wide boards and not unexpected here. It could have been alleviated and if I ever get the taxman off my back will be in son of V-twin the lake monster, by making the hulls rounded, but for now, I still need to continue finding fault with this first attempt, and I need to find another boat builder with a sense of

Maybe they'd heard there was a new pontoon to tie up to - just off Hythe beach.

Yeah they'd snatch your hand off if its a bit of old tut going begging regardless of wether it can do the job, our 'committee' sadly is as tightfisted a bunch of GP14 fodder as ever an SC could muster, I even offered to sell them one I was getting rid of at the time, would have been perfect, but no they fall for every salesman's line, paid more and got less. We have two boats, the other, which that day I nearly had to launch to go rescue the rescue boat with but have since found out its throttle is jammed shut, is bigger and heavier still, we did have a small hand tiller operated rib for putting out buoys for windsurf racing on Tuesdays, this one is suposed to do both, but it is hopelessly heavy, the 20 horse outboard is a four stroke so has no kick, it won't even plane. They're so lucky they've never had a serious issue losing someone entirely but that day if you check that flickr feed there were some other fellas lurking.. ![]() |

Is there an entry point for air at the front end of the tunnel? I know that it's open at the aft end but I do wonder if there may be a slowing suction effect nonetheless.

Excellent Warts and all blog. Liked this bit which considerably reinforces that you've succeeded at least in part with the entire point of the exercise :
'There then followed some of the most enjoyable yachting about I'd experienced, control issues aside, she felt really well balanced, happy to sit at an attitude that neither dug the opposite rail in, nor sat too flat to squat. The nose happily reared up and over rather than crashing through head waves upwind, the bear off was a tad scary without adequate jib control, but the acceleration surge was white knuckle inducing, definitely a thrill ride this'
Re: My earlier post about wanting it to invert so it doesn't get away from you - I stand by that, but agree with the poster who pointed out that , the rate at which it will blow away from you will be considerably slowed due to the sea anchor effect of the wings. At least that will give you a fighting chance to catch it before you become fish food.
That 'rescue' boat is clearly the result of an overly optimistic committee!
We have a 4.5m rib with 40hp and 5.5m rib with 50hp on our largish 1000' altitude windy reservoir. The smaller one is difficult when its very windy - certainly only really for use in dragging bodies out rather than aiding recovery of the dinghy itself . The 5.5m on the other hand is just brilliant for gnarly days - can do anything we throw at it. It amazing how much difference 1m and 10hp makes.
We did have a 5.5m open 'dory' type but that capsized when trying to turn in the waves near a leeward shore starting to tow a boat (caught sideways onto and so rolled by a wave). So we decided it wasn't up to the job and to get rid of it.
Maybe Hythe want it? ![]() Edited by Hector - 27 Apr 12 at 1:15pm |
