They could sail it easily, what they couldn't do, is right it once it's gone over, not without the help of a rescue boat...
It is an absolute blast to yacht about on in a breeze, but if you do cock up as I did yesterday after another of my dubious control systems jammed and took me over, (The problem at Hythe, once you're out in a breeze especially at High Tide, there's no easy go back sort something out then go back out again, so I shouldn't really have tagged onto the back of a race with a main sheet that was too short and a jib semi permanently sheeted in, not a jib the size of my Alto jib in that breeze. Anyway it had to be tested and now I know, it does turtle big style and if you think it's stable and difficult to put over when it's the right way up you should try righting it with a twenty horse outboard in a fairly hefty sea once it's fully up ended. I did get to study the bottom and noted the centreboard was tilted too far forward though. So it's back to the drawing board with the view of designing something that isn't too knaff to stop the mast going under, that and repairing the damage the prop of the boat did to various bits... Hey ho, not straightforward this boat developing stuff is it? I think someone got some pics early on, and my GPS stuff didn't function when it "lost contact with the satellites" presumably when the iPhone was under the hull and under the water for a fair time whilst I puzzled as to how to get it back up the right way before we drifted all the way to Folkestone, so I've no idea what speeds we achieved.

When i got my vortex its mast was leaky and it liked to invert and stay there, the easiest way to right it was cat-style using the wind under the mast and blow it upright?
I think it is generally understood that you are a fairly low-displacement person?, Judging by the use of engines you were completely stuck down once inverted or under more favourable conditions would you have got it to move at all and lift an edge?

it might have been predictable, but it still sucks for you. Just a thought, but it might be worth considering a K1 style keel... or as I said from the outset, just suck it up and quick performance & easy to sail just screams beach cat to me. You could probably get an old Hobie or D15 for less than a grand....

It would be harder to capsize. You will have to sail like a right muppet to pitch one in.... ![]() |

Needs to sail more...

don't t hey carry those lever arms on some of them... I've not sailed them other than off a caribbean beach in shorts and (shock) no buoyancy aid... I still managed to capsize it.

Not sure of the full details of your problems, but yes I would say so. I'm not saying I havent had my problems recovering cats in the past, but I have chucked it in and inverted in lumpy sea with big breeze before and dealt with it. The significant advantage that normal cats have is the tramp. The big breeze that has just blown you over is then a massive help at blowing you back upright again. Once you get the wind under it that is. Another factor is the size of your boat. I could see that being a struggle on your own. Is your mast completely sealed? I've seen people really struggle and have to be rescued and it was down to the mast filling with water. On the Dart, the mast is so chunky that its a hell of a lot of water you could end up fighting against!
