Don't start with the HISC bashing. HISC has 18 registered RS700's and 10 of them have done at least one race in the Spring Series that started three weeks ago. That's a pretty good ratio in sailing / racing terms.

Of course you care what people think; that is why you are on here telling us all about it. If you didn't care what people think you could have gone about your project in private.

Let see if you can right the old coal barge from turtle in 25 knots and lumps; then we'll know how safe your creation is ... those 49ers may have capsized in China but they were soon up & running again; unaided ...

Flop? Flop ffs! If it were do you think for one moment I would give a flying feck as to what a bunch of know nothing arse draggers, content and gullible enough to buy into the crap they are served up constantly in the name of 'fun' think? Buying  inherently unsafe boats that you couldn't take out without the benefit of a rescue launch to hold steady enough for you to get back into if you fall out, call that a success?
A good marketing con maybe as is the MPS, one we all fell for, but at least the Soslows and Streakers don't offer more than they deliver..
All those RS700's laying idle at Hayling that's a success?
The second hand value of a 49er? I bet they really hold their value - er not.

The Blaze is a success in that it delivers without pretention as does the Phantom and as do a few others..

Had the builder not been under pressure and then closed, or if I find a builder locally and there is rumoured to be one Neal knows off, then another hull could be fashioned or this one modified to make it go better in  light wind, but first lets see what she can do unmodified over the course of the summer months.

It's broad as it has adjustable racks...

"The Blaze is suitable for a wide range of helm weights, typically 11 to 16 stone."

is there an optimum weight range for a blaze?
the same, but different...

au contraire- there is and has always been a lot of perplexity and confusion.

On the one hand it was an 'obvious' candidate to get a kite, but that would slashed the fleet in two, probably even more as some would want a w/l weapon with a 12+sqm whereas  others would like the 'sh*ts n giggles' kite that really wouldn't add much VMG downwind, but could at least be used on a reach.

It's what the market might have wanted at first glance wasn't it?  Certainly the buzz from the RS100 could have been easily channelled into 300 new boat sales 4 years ago now when the only viable competition was the Vareo.... but how many would have stuck with it for club racing?  Asymmetrics rarely seem to pay unless it's a noddy kite like on a 200.

Does the UK sailing's infrastructure really support singlehanded asymmetrics?  Even if it did, would windward/leewards get boring week-in/week-out?  I don't know, I've never had the luxury to find out...  it's never taken off at our sailing club, which is one of the biggest inland puddles in the UK, but then we've got a certain resistance toward it that previously I've abhorred, but more recently have begun to appreciate.

So have Cirrus done the right thing, holding fire on this asymmetric hype- riding out the vocal 'wtf are you thinking- bang a kite on it Mike' mantra of a few years back?  I don't know, but maybe Mike was right all along- incremental development seems to work for the long term of the class and it's growing.  I know one respected dinghy journalist and commentator was not overly impressed with either the D1 or RS100 for club racing for this very reason- it simply doesn't fit with the club racing on offer at most clubs.

I'm keen as the next person to sail a kited boat, but I'm realistic now to know if there were a few Blazes at Draycote I'd happily join them and to be honest, we wouldn't need to 'overhaul' the club racing programme to get good sailing to do it.  It would fit alongside the Lasers & Solos as good singlehanded option.  I'll see what develops over the next 12 months at club level, the 300 is still very much a good option too... always a Solo to fall back on.
