GRF - As mentioned when we were at Slide a couple of months ago I am Race Officer for the Glyn Charles Pursuit Race (HISC, Sunday 20th May). Did try to explain to you that Chichester Harbour is quite a tactical place to sail but you didn't think the tide/ebb's/channels/local knowledge would take you more than 10 minutes to master (took me over 10 years and I still learn something new every time I sail there!). But as the race is a celebration of life and always held in a good spirit I am quite happy to give you a 'friendly' PY number and propose to start you two minutes behind the RS100's which has a fairly large local fleet and should be able to assist in showing you around the course - you will be able to blast past them when you see the finish line. |

Well from being a total disaster, Gun went so did the wind and a swirly drifter with kite problems and jib sheeting issues still not on the pace, resulting in a one leg lapping by the leading contender, (all though as we met at the bottom of the run/reach, there was a bit of light breeze and I'd jury rigged the jib so it did pull in a manner, we had a few tacks where the twin held its' own upwind, until we both sailed into another hole, then almost the entire fleet came by on a reach while we were still beating with a swirl from out to sea cancelling the offshore breeze.
By the time I'd finished, just ahead of the last laser 2000, I was pretty despondent, I was just going to head in when the sky cleared the sun came out and a force two pushing three breezed in from the sound east. Immediately things changed, the hull lifted, she ripped up wind, I swung her about bunged the kite up and for a few minutes horsed downwind fully on the edge of the racks and it was just sensational, nothing else I can say, the jib worked fine, the kite almost stayed full for more than three hundred yards... So not the total wipeout the drifter had proved it to be, but still some work to do, the boys in the boat did take some video of the earlier pfaffing about regrettably by the time it blew, their battery had run out.. Whatever.. it goes when it blows and that's about it..

he is more than welcome to launch at m.w.y.c. one thing is certain, the v-twin would be the fastest boat on the water. our puddle is so small, there would be no room for any other boats! ![]() |

Hayling Island? That is the same Hayling Island I sailed round a few times thirty years ago whilst you were still getting beaten up by brownies and the bread knife putting steak on your black eye.. Has it moved then? You haven't been buggering about with those channels have you? |

Er it is supposed to be a funboat.. Is that where I've been going wrong all this time? Expecting it to be fun. Instead of pain and frustration. That's exactly what I'm trying to do, make it easy and fun, no pain, no unintentional swims and fecking about.

Fair enough but with all the bold claims you were making last year I am expecting something that could whoop a 2000!!!!!
Some more development work required I guess. The hull shape has always looked like it would be a dog in light to medium winds. so much wetted surface area. My point is not sure what use it will be if it's only any good in strong breeze. Needs to be an all rounder for the uk....

The breeze that got it going was only a force 2, not even a white cap, it just needs constant power to build on it needs 6-8 knots. We barely had 3 -5 mph today until a little breeze freshened in after the race.
I'm sure it's going to be OK eventually once all the niggles are sorted.

So you "bunged the kite up and for a few minutes horsed downwind fully on the edge of the racks" in Force 2? What are you going to do in a F.4?
I've been trying to figure out the state of over- or under-canvassing of the V-Twin for a while. On Redoubt lake you've said it felt underpowered in a F.3, but today in a F.2 you're on the edge of the rack? My rough calculations would indicate that if you're using a 4sqm jib with a Vortex main, notwithstanding the extra beam of the V-Twin, you must be appreciably more powered up than a Vortex. I'm sure the boat needs a lot of sail area to overcome that wetted area in the lighter stuff, but I'm concerned that your available righting moment won't be enough to balance it when the wind is up to, say a F.4-5. Further trial will reveal all, no doubt. Were you able to heel the boat over today to lose some of that wetted area?
