As I said, it's all gone quiet. A few people who I think have real information are being very quiet. But rumour is that Jim is about right. Like many people sailing around here, I am well aware of the Byelaws, most of us could probably do a fair job of reciting them. |

I don't know I'd want to be quite as dogmatic as that. Supposing, for instance, a ship was outside the navigation channel? Doesn't the exclusion zone only apply in the shipping channel? Or supposing a boat had been instructed a ship was turning in one direction, and took a course under the direct instruction of the harbour authorities to avoid its planned course, and the ship then turned in the other direction? The local word is complete rubbish then. There are specific by-laws in the solent covering a moving exclusion zone around large vessels. There is no way, no way at all, that the yacht could have been "in the right".

From his facebook wall (not hard to find), it appears that he had intended to be out with another Lymington moth sailor (and occassional poster here), but for whatever reason that scenario didn't pan out. Also some details of his kit failure, and acknowledgement that not having a phone/VHF was an error.

If it breaks it wasn't strong enough, if it doesn't break, it is too heavy... most extreme boats are looking to be between these two points, so are hardly going to pass the Lloyds scantlings recommendations, are they?

Do you? ... I don't. I think if you are going out sailing on your own, particularly at this time of year it's a good idea to plan on the assumption it's something that may happen.
