I seem to remember that Puma required outside assistance in the Volvo ocean race when they broke their rig. In the Vendee someone lost their keel and then the rescuer got dismasted. Maybe we should all stop sailing as clearly the risks are too great.
The people on this forum who have never had a breakage or needed any form of outside assistance have obviously never left port. Remenber the old adage a sailor who has never run aground has either never left the harbour or is a liar.
You guys would do well in the nuclear industry never going down stairs without holding onto the hand rail with both hands or never carrying a hot drink on stairs. The list goes on and on. My wife is in mountain rescue and they have to deal with a few people breaking limbs whilst walking. I think we should ban walking:)

Not sailing, but the American SAR has examples of people running and hiding from their would-be rescuers to avoid being charged for the rescue. http://www.alpinerescueteam.org/pdfs/Golden%20-%20No%20Charge%20for%20Rescue%20Final%20.pdf
If my local water rescue started billing, I would paint my boat blue-gray

an interesting point Peaky... does a standard dinghy insurance policy cover against claims of salvage?

Personnel rescue should definitely be FOC. However the rescue team almost certainly has a legal right to claim a salvage fee for the boat. Luckily the RNLI renounce their legal right to claim salvage. But if the yacht had towed the Moth in...

Let's not get too ott here. Are you the dreaded elf and safety brigade??. The guy will be feeling most embarrassed probably and I suspect the coast guard will have given the chap a good dressing down once he has recovered. Lots of people go out dinghy sailing on their own and I suspect incidents like this are quite unusual. |
