Itnremindsnme of when I was recused in my yoof on the river Tay out sailing my Magnum 9 (very cool in its day) and the mast went.
A granny watching from the nearby nursing home phoned the police and the broughty ferry offshore lifeboat came to me rescue.
All very embarrassing but learnt a few lessons.
The biggest problem with a boat like that is its virtually impossible to paddle the thing like in more stable dinghies.
Wishing the guy a speedy recovery  and hope he gets out sailing soon....(maybe with some company next time)

so picking up on GRF's point in the other thread... should the sailor be fined for this?  Would that be enough incentive for the rest of us to take note about assessing risk before setting out?

Some countries will charge the cost of the rescue.  In the case of Abby Sunderland, those costs were on the order of $300k which the family could not afford.

Mind you, someone who gets in a pickle, may put off making the call until too late, hoping to self rescue and save money.

It's gone very quiet.
Word locally was that the yacht was actually in the right.
Video can be very deceptive!

I think given that all we know about this incident comes from one report which may or may not include all the relevant information and may or may not be biased in it's content that talk of retribution is a bit far fetched. How do we know what equipment he had with him - maybe with cold hands he had dropped the bag containing his vhf and mobile phone. How do we know he wasn't waiting for his shore buddy to arrive in the back up rib when the passing yacht called the RNLI?

Round my the neck of the coast we have a very good relationship with our local RNLI guys. They have categorically stated that if we are in trouble & need assistance don't hesitate in getting them out. That is why they are there. There have been a couple of times that I know of in the recent past that their services have been used for club members & we are obviously very grateful & hold various fund raisers for them during the year.

So......after this ego serving  persecution and humiliation has been dished out by several people in this thread, he should also be made a special case and be legislated against.

........Jeez, this board is sounding more and more like the Jeremy Vine show every day.
