I think that diagram needs to be posted on the net somewhere as "why classes should ban adjustable standing rigging". It must be a substantial part of £1,000 quid to put that lot together, whereas on my IC, which has a basic nothing adjustable on the water setup, I probably spent little over £100.

In the performance gained per pound spent ratio it probably comes out just ahead of using gold instead of lead for correctors because it takes up less space in the boat...

I'm not sure Jim.
I suspect it makes more difference than you give it credit for.
I think it may be key to why Merlins are potent over such a wide range of windspeeds.
Wouldn't want it in 400's though, some boats/classes are rightly kept simple.

I think it's genius, like that spinnaker pump contrivance, just wasted on an old tub, think what all this ingenuity could do on a half decent modern hull.

I can't wait to try some of these ideas out, love the idea of a one string does it all approach.

All that talent trapped in sailings answer to traditional coffins.

GRF you are getting soft in your old age - there was nearly half a compliment in that last post.

I've always been soft....

Soft in the head, spending countless thousands on all these boats..

I do think your drawing and pulley thing is rad, be nice to see it in the flesh, if I could risk catching woodworm or weil's disease from some old rotting tub you attached it all to. Wink

Probably the best place to look is at the Dinghy show.  The boat on the Allen stand is usually rigged with a single string - last year they had an Alb, the previous year they had a very nice system on a Scorpion that also hooked the kicker into the single string system.

Adjustable shrouds are pretty standard on an Alb - put your dark glasses on (so no one recognises you) and come and have a look on the stand. I cant guarantee a single string system on the display boat this year, but if I am around (Sat) I will be happy to talk you through it.

Jamie has the Merlin single string system on computer, with forestay, shrouds, lowers and kicker all adjusted with one line and 2 cleats.."rig back", "rig forward". He could advise you and point you in the right direction.  Or perhaps buy a Merlin, as the system is standard on your £17 K Winder Merlin, even if you see it in the flesh, you still won't be able to figure it unless you have Professor Brian Cox as a mate.
Jon Turner, has a neat new system , a true one string on "Shebazzle" showing the rod kicker arrangement, and will be on show at the dinghy show. So have a go and have a peak and pay homage you unworthy Jeremy Clarkson wind up merchant at bimbling string genius.
Too many toys..not enough time

I do relish the opportunity to cross dress, so perhaps I can pretend to be a crusty old female admirer, do you prefer blondes or brunettes.

Either way it's a date, I'll be there.

Who are you and what have you done with GRF ?
The real GRF would not admit to making a date to look at a Merlin !
