Funnily enough the team racing bit has been said by someone who sailed it very recently but arguably slower boats do provide closer racing.  Plus the Firefly is a bit bullet-proof (student-proof) even if really gives advantage to those on the light side.  In the day I preferred Larks ...

Larks were OK.
Bosuns were OK if there was some breeze.
Laser II's without kite or trapeze were miserable for a largish crew!

I enjoyed team racing, when done well. Long time ago though!

by the time I was at uni, Larks were generally miserable as no uni had bought any in years, and the remaining ones tended to have issues with key features such as "staying afloat".

For some bizarre reason, Strathclyde had a set of RS200s. Trying to race those downwind in a blow without a spinnaker was "entertaining".

As a larger crew, I'd much rather have had something like an Icon than our Fireflies.

suprised me the Snipe didn't catch on for team-racing, quite nice boats really based on a few sails in one stateside some time ago

I did say 'in the day' ... inflation up to 28%, beer about 15p a pint but going up almost weekly (and we moaned !) winter of 'discontent'  and university boats, often Larks, were treated miserably as ever ... one of the unversal constants.  Still are from what I see but they have mostly shrunk into that retro 'classic'  ... that is the Firefly !

Remember you have never had is so good ... as .. er .... or was that us ?

here are some of the results of the pys our club has spat out, the new py is calculated from each classes perfomance against the predicted class py range (used and suggested).   whether we will use the suggested pys from the rya, stick to the old formula of you can veto your suggested handicap or these we will have to wait and see. Hopefully we can convince everyone that making everyone move handicap if it is suggested is the fairest way to go for everyone.

Can add another to the list ...

'They' have decided in the infinate wisdom that goes with those who rely on 'hearsay' to set 'local handicaps'  that Icon should start with the Merlin rockets off 990.   We are obviously sailing far too fast or 'they' would rather the FF's (similar speeds) should hold forth cos they are really nice and steady sort of fellows etc. (Conspirosy theories rule etc ) Sorry we don't have the 'marketing clout' to get something a bit more realistic really but what the ***k - who really cares.  We might have a bit of sailing fun anyway if it blows

If the crew does not get into a right sulk and  try and win the singlehanders as an alternative we may be there in '03' ... to prove it should be between 1020 and 1040.  Either that or we put a third sail on it !!  LOL   now there's a thought !

Mike L.

PS - So come on Greame .. Go on - we dare you .... ask them for for a V-2 handicap  !!!!? (you don't have to go ... just ask !)
