I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one GRF (loving your work btw...).
The handicap system has been in place for eons, and it is designed to be tweaked in this way, with specific mention within the system that the RYA published numbers are framework for clubs to work from to find the correct numbers for their specific water/conditions. If the SailJuice folks have looked at the numbers and come up with alterations to make the system fairer for specific events at specific locations then fair play to them (I'm not a regular Laser sailor btw). If, for example, there have been top guys in Lasers competing on the old numbers, yet not getting any where near the top of the winners list (over a number of years/conditions) then it demonstrates that there's an issue with the published PY number at that event/location. One thing I'm absolutely certain of - the guys that have come up with these new numbers must be 100% sure that they're doing the right thing in introducing such a controversial change - they've no interest in making the events a Laser benifit, or indeed doing something that'll result in reduced competitor numbers - bravo for a brave move!

I wonder what they'd make of my contraption if I ever get it finished in time for one of those events, can just imagine showing up getting a random temporary number of whatever then getting trounced just like normal by bloody lasers, and you can't even catch mackerel inland.
Still I'm sure it will be fun just the same.

Dear GRP; what PY do you think should be allocated? |

they've had the balls to change the number from the RYA list and apply something considered to more appropriate.... BRILLIANT! If it works out to be a bit too generous, then guess what folks... they can always ease it back next year.
PY is what, a 60 year old system based on continuous improvement, and does blindingly well considering the entrenched, wooly jumper environment it operates in. Without modest changes how on earth is supposed to improve over the medium to longer term? Well done sailjuice series- bloody good events, good atmosphere and great fun. |

In this instance the result would be a combo of both the design and GRPs awsome tactical knowhow so I guess if they PY the design GRP will win easily as he is a tactical genius who is able to make energy from nothing ... so whatever PY he is given victory is assured. |

The problem is that you sail on bumpy stuff mate, us pondies suffer like mad trying to get the thing moving so a change in that direction is very welcome. I really do think the PY should be split at least to sea/inland figures (I am assuming there is enough data to do this of course).
That would probably help with some of the perceived 'hard done by' and 'bandit' classes as a lot of this is likely to be down to local conditions.
I know development classes change, I am not even going there, the PY does catch up eventually!

one of the troubles with the way this thread is going is the fact some people think that most people sail on the sea and because of this, think its somehow more important.
![]() the fact is there are a lot more pond monkeys than sea monkeys! ![]() |
