Hi Greame
Well I thought it was a wind-up as well, always followed your own posts so well versed etc .... but heck ... always a chance to promote God's chosen craft ! ;-) Mike L. Edited by blaze720 - 17 Oct 11 at 9:17am |

The Streaker would probably suit your weight but the match/team racing comments were, I believe, a tongue in cheek description of some of the racing at this year's nationals (which I did not attend). However, you will also encounter the occasional older person at Streaker events though you may find you have some difficulty beating them. If you are lucky enough to grow older you may find the Streaker a class to stay with. @GRF - there are plastic Streakers, but they are in short supply due to the current demand for the class, second hand ones are like rocking horse poo. Builders are Rooster and Dave Butler Boats. |

Hi Sandgrounder
I suggest you buy a Laser, it is exactly what you describe as what you want but with a few changes from the original for the better, like controls that work. Of course you will probably dislike getting beaten by kids as much as you appear to dislike people over 60(the new middle age). |

does it matter? Bound to be a sockpuppet from the streaker class, they're just catching up with the internet pimping via the forum game. But hey, gives a discussion point beyond 'what is the definition of a skiff'. will it work- no the streaker is a.n.other middle of the road, nothing much to offer the bored club laser sailor singlehander. So you unseat big fleets, a balanced primary yardstick for a boat that in fairness, probably sails a bit nicer.... great another boat choice based on compromise. What's it got that the Solution hasn't? Or a Supernova come to think of it. Or maybe a Lightning 368... join the list of Laser killers out there. The only ones which seem to attract any kind of real numbers in the UK are the Blaze, Phantom, Solo and possibly RS100- and each of these has its compromises. |

Rogue is right...........
Unless you have international ambitions then the current 'noise' shouldn't affect you, so Laser Radial will be the best regular competition you get. You have two problems, you like many, are a bit bored with Lasers and secondly there are so many good young laser radial sailors, that the older you get the less competitive you will probably be. ![]() The Solution has no traction, Lightning368 is small in stature and class, Streaker and Solo in Epoxy are nice boats for your weight, but both slower than a Laser. Supernova in MKII form is quicker if sailed properly and at least has a rig that works and is very adjustable. Blaze is a nice boat and now well built, but prefers a bit of sea room and a blow so depends where you sail. RS100 needs a higher level of skill and is more expensive than a Laser, but is a much higher level of boat in all ways and has probably been the fasting selling new dinghy since....well the Laser I expect. If you really want a Tera for adults, it is made and its called the RS QBA. Again, not as fast as a Laser but don't confuse it with a Pico, because it is a hell of a lot better tha that.

A PY somewhere approaching 2000 I heard, a Bandit of all Bandits under the radar because of extreme and total mediocrity. I only know all this having researched it a bit when one came up for sale in my quest for a cheap old munter for winter bogging about down the lake.

Blimey, you lot are cynical this morning - I'd hate to be a newcomer to the sport and read this thread, thinking that I was looking for a small singlehander, too.
Most classes in the UK are sailed by a few people who happen to enjoy that boat, or bought it because it was cheap, or a plethora of other reasons, which may, for a very small minority, include the handicap.
I just hope that people reading this understand that most of the opinions on this thread have pretty much nothing to do with fact. Lets take Simonw99's comment about the Supernova. "Supernova in MK2 form" simply has a different deck - no difference in speed. Most of the other opinions are equally devoid of factual basis.

So what are you saying then Rupert, the Streaker is not a mediocre handicap Bandit?
The Solo is not an ancient design used by the undead whilst they await the inevitable, illustrated by mobility scooter and zimmer frame parks adjacent to their events The Laser is an ancient device used for slow tortuous removal of future pedestrian capabilities of its helm in preparation, for Solo uptake? The Supernova is er not exactly Super, in much the same way that the Lightning is er not exactly as nimble as it's moniker might suggest.. The RS100 sells fast because it's owners rid themselves of it once they find they can't get back in it if they fall out. Have I missed anything else out as to reasons why the Blaze is about the only choice for a light helm but it needs sea room. Edited by G.R.F. - 17 Oct 11 at 11:51am |

Rupert
I never said the MKII 'Nova was faster or slower than a Mark I, but some people didn't like the look of the MK!. The MKII is fully self draining and stiffer so in waves it does have advantage over a MKI on the sea. As to the other comments, we have two epoxy streakers, a lightning, a solo, supernova and three rs100's and 4 blazes in the fleet, all of which I sail against regularly and most of which I have sailed or owned, so reasonable to have a view on relative speed. The only one we don't have has a Solution and I doubt anyone would violently disagree that they have little traction which was my only comment on it. Check your facts before you start pronouncing on others. Perhaps you could inform us as to which you have sailed........ ![]() |
