Not sure how you could frame a set of rules that kept the concept of the V Twin but allowed restricted development without having a measurement form so long you'd run out of welsh forest. Maybe a smod hull but with just a max sail area above it?

I'd love to see the concept adopted, if I ever get to making it perfect (for me that is) I'd happily release it to all and any builders and sailmakers with the view that the more folk did it, the more would have access, not quite sure of the mechanics of how I'd go about it just yet, it is still very early days, there may still be some nasty trait laying undiscovered, but yes I can see the connection in thinking between what the Merlin has and what I'm aiming at, which pure and simple is "Performance without Pain" an ad slogan I'd happily wield.(I don't hate merlins tickle my rep religiously sails them every year so I'm duty bund to poke fun at them, the B14 being his other steed) As to the V2, I haven't finished yet, I do want to eliminate righting issues with my blow up sail/wing idea which I was discussing with a colleague last night as to the best development sailmaker/designer to approach, the guy we want unfortunately has just shifted back to the states and we don't know of any locals other than the windsurfing sail builder I use for my windsurf prototypes. So on the one hand it's a good idea, but only if the criterion 'ease of handling over performance related issues can be built and maintained in a set of box rules.

It is interesting that a logo is being considered for v twin. This seems to indicate that consideration is being given to it becoming an acknowledged class. Now would it be a development class or a SMOD? If it were a development class and given GRF's views on open development then it would become obsolete within a few years with early boats being confined to the nettles. If it were a SMOD then in a few years then it would be some out dated old crock being kept alive by the misguided enthusiasm of a few elderly gentlemen. There is another course, that of the limited development class.....like the despised (by GRF) Merlin Rocket. V twin has certain similarities with the venerable Merlin, it looks silly to many eyes but that sillyness is born of function, to wit, the Merlin is ridiculously wide for its waterline width, but this increases righting moment, funny square topped sail to give maximum area within the rules.....ah, rules? Will V twin have them? Should the World be allowed to share the experience of high performance continuing in the same form or will it only be available to the wealthy few who can afford a new boat every year or so?

How sad! Its a Vortex sail. Get over it. Yes it would be bad manners if you were racing it, but for development sailing why on earth not. After all the sail might well go back on a Vortex when you get a rig designed for the boat. When I was younger I has a Honda CB400F with a Kawasaki badge on one side of the petrol tank and a Suzuki one on the other: adds humour to life... Edited by JimC - 07 Sep 11 at 9:06am |

Hmm yes nice offerings from Wing-Wang and C'p'n Jack not sure a Merlin logo is the way I want to go and as for Winston...
Nope, so far I think I'll stick to what I've got thanks.. If I ever get as far as sticking logo's on sails, I have had an official complaint from a Vortex representative of a high echelon and request that their logo be removed which I'll have no problem with, I'd even missed the fact it said Laser..
