How does the 900 do compared to the XX?

Also, what state is the XX in? Is it still the bolt on kit that had a gantry that tore in half as soon as it saw a ripple and the flares that fractured all the gunwhales they were put on? Even the kite pole was too flimsy, so it just bent off instead of giving any more power/speed. Or have they (as I heard one person say) just built a 29er with all the XX attachments built in?

I am very biased to want the XX to get the Olympics spot ( I adore the 9er range) but if the 900 is going to be a real boat, it'll get my vote, instead of a jury rig. (sorry Chris T if you're reading this!! Confused)

Just a note, the last time I really had anything to do with the XX was at the Garda worlds in '09, so all may have changed since then!

Main things that have changed since Garda 2009 are:

1) new dedicated bowsprit; I guess in Garda you used 59er sprit; new one seems a bit stiffer (don't know if it's longer than 59er one. I'm not mistaken the new sprit is 30 cm longer than the standard 29er)
2) new alluminium rudder gantry (black).
3) reinforced mast, to counterbalance the switch from FRP Mainsail track to a plastic track (cost issue, I guess)

I think they have also chaged the gunwhale extensions, but I haven't seen the new ones, so I'm not sure.

Actually, the rig is now completely different to the 59er, but this has been the case for quite some time now. The spinnaker is flatter and she carries another 1sqm of main plus jib. The mast is stronger, in order to better support a twin wire crew and a square cut top main. PLus the alu rudder gantry and gunwhale extensions.
Pass the skiff, man!

I've always thought the 29er hull was just a little small to turn intO a twin wire machine. Having owned a 29er years ago I thought it was great but just a little on the small side for 2 adults. whereas the 900 concept would surely be more capable on that front.
The fact that I have yet to see an xx on the water does make me wonder how widely it's been adopted.
Also how long will a 29 er hull last with twin wire rig loads?
However I suppose there is the obvious family link with the 49er in it's favour.....

Don't think loads are much an issue, since rig tensions are not that much higher than the standard 29er.

As far as size is concerned, I would love as well a bit wider boat; I have no big doubt that rs900 will be faster and could have a also more "stable" feel, because of the width and the flatter floor.

Surely the load through the mast foot and overall rig loading will be hire when you add an extra wire?

All sorts of loads change in quite a complicated way if you have a two string/caps rig against a single string/spreaders rig. The mast is supported quite differently. I'd normally expect the total loads to increase because the extra trapeze unloads the windward shroud and that has to be compensated somehow.

When I changed my Cherub from single string/single shroud rig to caps/checks/shrouds I used lower shroud tension but alongside the shrouds pretty near the same load again in the check stays, so the total loads were much greater - to such an extent that I had to beef up the internal framing because the boat was bending.

"cup of tea" ?

what about a spot of morris dancing ? ?

G.R.F what are your thoughts on morris dancing ? ?

does it happen in your district ? ?
