I don't think it will make much difference in the long run.
But after a few elections, maybe people will change the way they pick second choices. A lot more convoluted tactics are possible, but if a certain 'centre' party are hoping to be everybody's second choice, I think (and hope) they will be swiftly disappointed!

How did we get from the expenses scandal 2 years ago to total apathy today?  Can't anyone see that voting against the majority of current MP's might make a little difference.

My thoughts exactly, I don't think we've been presented with the best alternative system but there will not be another chance to change things for years. A no vote will also be conveniently interpreted as a public desire to maintain the status quo, a yes vote indicates a desire to change and opens up the possibility of further change.

But why vote for a system that will be expensive to implement and won't really change anything.

I agree with that, there isn't an option that I would vote for this time.

TBH - I don't care if it is FPTP, AV, PR, or whatever.
Make voting compulsory and accept that the result is the word of the people rather than the word of those who could be bothered.
Majority of elections in this country (and plenty of others)  are won by the apathy vote.

There should have been a button on the poll for "I've still not got a clue, my vote will just be a stab in the dark as both the Yes and No blurb has been completely negative and made me want to vote for the "Benign Dictator" option.

Don't confuse the referendum with an election. Plenty of Labour MPs dont want AV. The referendum is about which is the most suitable voting system.

Haven't we sailed under AV (or maybe PR) since we dropped the 0.75 score for first?  People can win a whole championship without a single first place!

Not really.
An AV analogy would be where the last boat in each race is not allowed to race in the next race and the crew join their next favourite boat, until there is only one boat left.
This would have to be a class where having more crew makes you go faster (at this point the analogy starts to break down).

I can assure you I'm not confusing this with an election.  The second referendum we have ever had in England and the BBC relegate it to a "youth" debate on BBC 3 !!!?  Half the Labour MP's don't like AV for the same reason Tory MP's don't - they may have to go out to talk to their electorate in previously safe seats.  It's a shame, as it was originally a compromise proposal to keep the Labour party together on the issue of voting systems.   If they hadn't come up with it we may be voting on a proportional system now.

Yes, most sporting analogies to election systems fall down fairly quickly.  Do we want to be governed on the same basis as a horse race?  Your idea might make an interesting spectacle for the Olympics!

I think one of the mistakes that's been made is reffering to it as "AV". One of the alternative names, "Instant Runoff", is far better- and describes much more neatly what it is- a runoff election that only requires one visit to the polling station.
There's been a lot of lies and disinformation- from both sides- but I reckon the "No" camapign shades the "yes" for being uttter scum.
