Don't confuse the referendum with an election. Plenty of Labour MPs dont want AV. The referendum is about which is the most suitable voting system.
Not really. An AV analogy would be where the last boat in each race is not allowed to race in the next race and the crew join their next favourite boat, until there is only one boat left. This would have to be a class where having more crew makes you go faster (at this point the analogy starts to break down). |

Haven't we sailed under AV (or maybe PR) since we dropped the 0.75 score for first? People can win a whole championship without a single first place! |

Wouldn't a hung parliament that is representative be better than the current one? It's a shame we haven't got an AV referendum on voting systems. As we haven't, I am voting voting for AV so we can tell politicians with our first choices what we actually want (how significant is the UKIP vote, for example). May be this will show them we need PR or lead to people going back to the two main parties - either would be better than all the wasted votes I've had in my lifetime. By voting yes you are devaluing minor party votes. What you are saying is if you were to vote Green or Raving Loonie is you have given the wrong answer so try again until you vote for one of the big parties. So no better than FPTP.
Your first choice minority party will always be eliminated. The fairest system of representation would be PR but that will always mean a hung parliament.

45% Beer 40% Wine 15% creme de menthe With the above results: If you think Beer should always win vote No. If you think the second choice of the Creme de Menthe drinkers is more important than the drink with the most votes, then vote Yes. So vote yes if you want to be governed by the second choice of people with no taste! |

Well, if you're voting "yes" in the referendum.... bear in mind that you are hoping to get your way via a FPTP system!

There is no "post" in First Past the Post- the racing analogy is flawed. Winning a close fought battle in FPTP is a bit like the winner being declared sixty metres down a 100m final. Some MPs take their seat with little more a quarter of those that vote (let alone the electoral role) voting for them. It's not hard to rank candidates. Hand counting does take a bit longer, but not that much longer- and in the constituencies where someone gets 50% of the first choice vote, it doesn't take any longer at all. This isn't quite perfect, but it's a pretty good analogy for our purposes, in a language many of you will understand. Edited by alstorer - 03 May 11 at 9:03pm |
