NEWS.....

Toby Peacock ('Peaky') is taking the Icon Demonstrator to Rock SC over the Easter weekend.  Anyone wanting to see the boat there etc get in contact with him direct.   It should be easier to do more trials / demos soon as additional boats become available after Easter.... (and I get our hull back !!)

Were you using the Australian Navy rig to windward technique Bethwaite describes on the Tasar website? I teach it now: I've found it much more likely to succeed first time than the RYA scoop method. The only time I've known it not to work is when the crew is so light they need both on the centreboard.

Here are a couple from today when X1 and Icon met on the water.  Although very different boats, it was interesting how like-minded the thinking has been and how applying current technology has made two leaps forward for dinghy design. Many thanks Mike for letting me have a play in the Icon it was great fun, I just need to work on my gybes! At least I kept you dry. Hopefully we will have more time next time and you can try the X1 too.
I like to take pictures of sailing, but I'd rather be sailing!

I sailed in the Tasar Nationals in Babacombe when I was a fit 60 year old crewing for a young experienced helm. Our race ended when on the second day we stuck it in on a screaming reach. The boat inverted instantly. Whenever we got it up it rolled off the swell and came on top of us, many times. Eventually I was exhausted and could not continue. Finally the rescue boat helped.....but that was it for me, race over. How that can be 'safe' escapes me.

Hi Jim

The classic Bethwaite view was always that inversion is better than the boat blowing away.... Yes of course and naturally we all agree with that.  BUT some boats, and I include the Tasar (great boat in most other respects) are so rapid to invert they are potentially a hazard anyway in my opinion.  A claimed reduced inclination to invert is not the same as stating it does not or should not invert !

On one occasion when sailing a Tasar with my young son a few years back it inverted so quickly (instantly) he got caught in the mast diamonds by his life jacket and was pulled, and then trapped, underwater.  This is every sailing parents nightmare and one that required me to get the mast back up to the surface in difficult and highly stressful conditions.  In the event the experience did not put him off sailing, or me going sailing with children,  but it would have put many off for life.


Incidents like that can happen but are far less likely if the boat is slower to invert imo.  Sure we can debate over the 'right' balance between 'instant' and 'a long time' but  nobody is suggesting boats should not be incapable of inversion here but my belief is that inversion, if very quick, is far more dangerous that some might think. Some trapeze boat incidents in recent years tend to suggest to me that entrapment is much more of a problem – and my own experience is it not restricted to those equipped with trapezes.
