Nice rant by rogue, but completely missing the point which was nicely made by Mike Bees on page 2.
The Laser has, like it or not, an important role in World sailing. This rule proposal and underlying spat between suppliers might well have a significant impact on the sport. Reducing the signal to noise ratio on the thread to about 10% the wibble was likely to mean many Laser sailors wouldn't bother with it, and that would probably make for less informed decision making on their part. As I soon realised, by challenging the wibble I was just making to s/n ratio worse and thus compounding the problem. That was why I edited out my posts which I should have had more sense than to post in the first place and why the mods were then entirely correct to delete them. In this thread, by contrast, you boys can wibble on to your heats content, which was why I created it. |

So what goes on here is all your decision then?
Then shouldn't this thread be in the Banter section? I didn't realise we had to cater for your sensibilities, why is that? Edited by G.R.F. - 01 Apr 11 at 1:41pm |

I can't believe all this .... all about that lovely little boat that made my jaw drop when I first saw one at Yarmouth 40 yrs ago. Had to wait another 12yrs before I could afford one. Got to the stage that I couldn't imagine ever not sailing one ... until my kids wanted a wirey, skiffy thing 8yrs ago. Now it sits festering in the boat park 'cos I've got too unfit to sail it like I used to. Please don't knock it. Or, if you do, do it gently!

I loved racing Lasers for around 20 years but then moved (grew !) on.
Last summer I sailed one in over 30knts of breeze in Greece - rash vest and shorts only . It was by miles the best sail of the year. and I remembered why I had started sailing them in the first place.

Thanks James,
I some times get the impression some people think they are the "sailing authority", either because they think they've been around enough to know it all or once upon a time did something to be viewed as important at the time. Just leave them to it. Sometimes I'll say something worth while, other times just can't be bothered and find the "banter" amusing. My opinion is you never know who is posting unless you know them personally.
I got shot down in flames for even suggesting the Musto Skiff as a boat which I would say could have the potential to replace the Laser. I didn't say it was the same as the Laser, or should be treated as that, I just said there are other options out there. There is an ehthusiasm about that class at the moment, that I've seen when I actually go to quite a lot of different sailing clubs. Doesn't matter how many boats have been sold world-wide, there is a good air about it. I actually wonder if some of the "sailing authorities" go to their club, or just stay at home thinking about what was. In my world, we view such folk as deadwood.
In the same instance, there are a lot of good opinions here. I enjoy hearing about the boats being developed in the Forum. I've enjoyed a good few discussions. The young guys such as Hugh are an asset to this forum and I hope they don't become disfrancised like you James. Not posting again allows the cranks to think they've won. Doug Lord was flamed really hardly, but you know what, some of the regular stallwarts aren't a million miles away. My 2p's worth.

Can't leave you boys alone five minutes, can I? You go and squabble in the playground about who's got the better toy and how that one is "so last year!". I've never sailed a Laser so I certainly wouldn't dare to venture any opinion on the matter but I think things have gone very heated very quickly. As one of our friends said earlier "This in not real life". It's only a discussion forum about dinghy sailing!
The world of dinghy sailing in the UK is a rather small microcosm, which gives it a lot of appeal. Go to the Dinghy Show and you'll met a minimum of 10 people you know, without looking. However, it's only a very small part of life.
Jimbo, I know where you are with giving up your identities on this forum. For a while, I used to post regularly, mostly rubbish, when I realised that other people's digs and criticisms (for being French - a coward -, being a woman - an idiot -, sailing a Topper for goodness sake, how low can you go!) were bothering me.
I asked Mark to delete my account, he suggested I reconsidered and I left it dormant for a long time. Now, I only jump in when I know I'm going to be ignored.
Jimbo, don't throw a paddy, please. You've had me in stitches too many times to count. Everyone else, PLAY NICE!

Which will he do first then, rejoin the forum, or sell the Rogue Skiff?
