Forgot to mention G.R.F.- D&D were one of the pair of B14s late for Sunday's start. They hadn't slpet in, they were just being inept :P

I got to sail the RS100 at Datchet on Saturday (see 100 thread for my report) fantastic boat and much better than I thought, although do I want one, no, sorry, not sure I could handle 8.4 mtr although I am told there is a 7.4 mtr version.

That will teach us for helping Barnsie. We do however now have some very bling looking carbon and in repayment beat him in both races that day

A nice sunny sail at the top end of a steady Force 3 on the Medway this Sunday, and 30 boats out for the "Ice Breaker" (most years it's a mis-nomer, and this was no exception).
There have been times over the winter when I've been pleased to be sitting in the heated luxury of a race box, but now i've been reminded that sailing needn't be freezing cold, i'm raring to go again!

I've identified my 'threshold' at 10 knots, above that and I start having serious issues with that big rig.. had it been later in the season I suppose I could have thrashed on, but it's not fun..
There ought to be a weight versus sail area guide somewhere.. I guess it's also to do with the boat width and the type of sail, the Blaze has a similar sized sail and that's nowhere near the trouble, then the racks are wider and it's a more stable boat to start with. But someone must have worked something out to do all those weight equalisation things in the nineties. It does ruin you're whole day (and the rest of the week until next time) when you f**k it up like that..

I really think you should be leaving the 10.2 in the bag all the time Graham
I found the 8.4 to much most of the time... the trouble with an unstayed rig is that you put all the power in the sail in the hands of the mast and sail designer and as they were trying to cater for the fat people as well its all pretty powerful. The normal trick of dumping the kicker to bear away starts by straightening the mast and powering up the sail just at the time you don't want it. I found that if I wasnt big enough to power through the zone then it was hard work, the trick was to dump a load of main, get some windward heal and then drive it hard through the manoeuvre quite quickly but it was real easy to over cook it and screw it in to windward On the other hand the 10 odd sq m on the Blaze is much easier even with a stiff alli, mast simply because you can loose all the power out of the top of the sail with the kicker and then the leverage from the wings helps me push it through. I was out this weekend :D Barely any wind, spent about 2 hours being yelled at by dad for my awful light weather upwind sailing and watching boats that we should be been competing with go past us.
