It seems the keel can't be that much drag based on the results of the Wimbleball Beastie Pursuit Smile

1st I think... and in 0-10knots

4th in the Starcross Steamer the previous week in a bit of breeze.

Yes, the Stratos Keel fits the same general description, but it's such a lumbering affair. As you say, lighter is the thing.
I guess the Stratos is so heavy because it needs toughness for some people to leave it on moorings, and it's relatively low-tech construction; but for a dry-sailed racing machine, huge weight savings could be made and a lot of that ugly freeboard dispensed with.
When you think how popular the Flying Fifteen is on inland waters, but it's total overkill weight and size-wise for most people's requirements at those venues, making it less fun to sail and more of a pain than need be to dry-sail.
Mark Giles' Orion SRD was nice, but a tad small/slow.  With 5.5m LOA, higher tech construction to keep the weight down and a trapeze, it would have been real fun. Orion's bulb was only 40kg, but combined with a carbon rig it sufficed to provide self-righting.

The Flying Fifteen and the K6 come to mind however they are heavy to handle. The Laser Stratos fits where you are looking and I am sure there is a market for a lighter and easier to manage ashore fast lifting keel dinghy.

Never mind the singlehanders. I'd love a two-man version, preferably with trapeze (and appropriately modified hull shape, obviously); it needn't need to be much heavier than the K1 - indeed, the bulb could probably be a little lighter if only self-righting rather than righting moment while sailing was required.

I was quite surprised as to just how much interest there was in it at the Dinghy Show. The stand always looked busy when I passed maybe indicating that there is more of a market fore this sort of thing for single handers.

I can't imagine that the bulb adds much in percentage terms to a total wetted area of what, more than three square metres? And if it's shaped well there should be little form drag from it.
 
Certainly, the boat felt pretty quick to me when i sailed in light conditions, judging by the angles, apparent relative to true, that i could sail downwind.
 
But we shall see as more people with a proven racing pedigree buy them, as I've no doubt they will in due course.

Actually it is probably the opposite as in less than 8 knots the greater wetted surface area of the keel is likely to be a disadvantage. 8 kts upwards and things level out.

Third for a non-trapeze boat in what looks like a pretty windy race says to me it will be even better on PY in lighter, displacement stuff, especially with that long waterline length and narrow waterline beam.
