My feelings are the maths are sufficiently advanced, possibly not utilised enough or well enough. In the past, it was hold your finger in the air and roughly guess, but I feel and know things have moved on a lot since then. If they are going to struggle with the maths, it will be interesting to see how the resin infusion goes. It's a small single hander, it's not going to be that difficult to get right before throwing into production and if you rush the boat into build, ie relying on built boat data, it's going to cost further down the line.

I'm intrigued that he says they'll use "resin transfer" infusion- this requires both a male AND a female mould- see here for more (and see on the left of there for "normal" infusion). Potentially better laminate quality, but much more expensive tooling. Checking again, it seems this is definitely what he's going for- the reference to "A and B surface tooling". Are there any other small boat builders using this technique?

Not to my knowledge, remember reading somewhere about a speedboat company doing it at some point, but I think it gets very expensive when you go above 20ft.

A lady friend of advancing years (don't say I said that) visited the show on Saturday with the express intention of buying a new Splash. This proved impossible as there was no manufacturer present and the class association seemed unable to help. Determined to buy something she bought....wait for it....an RS qba, or somesuch  device. What else was she to do? No one makes a sit in, rather than sit on, boat which can be handled by a light weight lady. Solo, expensive and too big, Byte a tippy plank, Streaker and Lightning too much sail. Perhaps the small rig RPX would have ticked the box had it been available?

It does- you're involving presses (to squeeze the molds together) and you've got two molds- which have to be  a matched pair. It's pretty expensive even at small scale, for set up- though cheaper I'd think than similar sized autoclave equipment.

thats such a shame Cry, because its a great well made little boat. have just sold my daughters( only because she got too tall and she wanted my lightning!!)

your friend should have got a second hand one or contacted the dutch manufacturer direct.

Comet Mino would have been ideal, plus you can upsize the rig on lighter days.

Europes are still made, but not in this country to my knowledge, and are a massive class abroad.  Olympic selection then rejection didn't do them much good here.  Fantastic boat.
the same, but different...
