As for his humour, I find him funny, I don't see anything tasteless about it.

You clearly have an issue with having an opinion which is at odds with the forum faithful. Of course you probably don't remember GRF under his previous names, I'm not sure how many times he was banned but I can assure you the current GRF is only one of his many personalities.

So what is your issue Tickler?

Atrocity.

GRF has never suggested building a dinghy for public consumption. He has however allowed public consumption and critisisim of his ideas. His windsurfing products are unknown by, and are of little interest to most of us, so what is your issue Atrocity?

Job done, 20 days without a post on this topic, Atrocity returns, then 13 posts in 2 days. Viral marketing at it's best.  How many new brands across different sectors did he say he was launching?  Looks like he owes me a beer.  Just surprised the new brands weren't named, or would that be a little obvious.  Wink

That's less true of foam sandwich hulls, where a five year old hull should be just as stiff as a new one, unless it's been damaged.
That is just a property of single skin frp, it really is something we should be not building dinghies from these days.
But I don't really knock Lasers, you can buy one for  £1k, buy a Rooster sail and have great racing against people on similar budgets. Without any tiresome PY debate. Or you can spend £6k or whatever and know you are racing level with some very good sailors. That's not bad!

That may be true at the top level of sailing but at club level (where 99% of Laser sailers are) the age (and even condition) of their hull make much less difference that the nut on the end of the tiller.

My boat hull is pretty ols (mid to lkate 80's I believe) and I am still regularly at the front of the fleet. Yes it does feel different to the brand new Laser I had once upon a time however it is no slower. Despite it's age it does plane very quickly compared to much newer boats.

At our open meeting it is up there and I am sure if I put a little more time in to it and went travelling I would give a good account of myself on the circuit.

This is with foils that are in needs of some tlc and a sail that has definitely seen much better days!
Why on earth would an older boat get onto the plane faster than newer boats.

I agree with you on all other points and from experience would suggest that an old hull can be fine in most conditions - especially inland. The two areas in which a newer, stiffer and probably lighter hull seemed to be faster was in waves and also getting onto the plane faster.

Hence your experiences must be down to technique ?

Look, this is not a 'business' scheme, this thing is never likely to be sold, it's an exercise to prove that a fast boat can be designed and built to suit me. I shall do it in my own time, my business is also going through some major upheavals right now, in the past two months we've launched five new brands in three different business sectors, this all takes time and resources, so like I said hobby and leisure stuff which this is, has to take a back seat.
I only got the final build schedule last week whilst I was up in Telford being fed junk food at our trade show, traditionally the busiest time of the year for us.

The completion date seems to be early May from memory, if I say go now and if I chuck the necessary funds in play it'll be on the water then... if I decide to go ahead that is, but right now, I've got loads of other stuff on and I want to be around when they lay the rocker up.

I have to say, while I think there are flaws in the concept, getting out there and designing a boat on a public forum shows a lot of guts. If I were now in this position, I would be taking a step back anyway, even if I had the finances and time sorted, to see what a fresh look at the idea brings up in a few weeks.

What a surprise!

I do not always naturally 'side' with Greame .... however even to get to an abstract concept stage beyond a doodle or two takes time and committment and some money.  To go further takes a hell of a lot more committment and a lot more money and it is not a decision to ever be made lightly unless you have money and time to waste.

I think it was never realitic to expect it to happen overnight ....  but lets not knock him on this one.   We only really learn by 'doing' in the end and sometimes you have to 'put up or shut-up' and do it, but only if you are still fully convinced, and sometimes you have to reconsider the full implications and gently back away.   Neither of these choices is automatically 'right' - it all depends on the circumstances.

If it does not happen in the end that may be the best decision allround but at least he may now knows more of the 'route' to developing new boats, even possibly a 'one-off' - it is tough and risky and not to be underestimated.

One thing is certain - if you never think outside the box you will always spend your life in it.
