Less than 10 mins to local puddle with friendly club but poor wind and about 45 mins (an hour if Cheddar Gorge is full of grockles) to Bristol Corinthian which has the space and wind for a decent blast.
Another option we looked at were clubs where it was further to drive but you could camp on site.

Actually how many of us have chosen our house for its proximity to a sailing club and the resultant social life?

Not me, yet. It is something I'm thinking about when I next move.

Something that's interesting to me is how few people have mentioned driving past the nearest club to get to the club with the right fleet. Club atmosphere/people/facilities/firendliness/water seems to me to have come up a lot more often.

I have a feeling that more cat designs fall into the same performance bracket than Monohulls do, so you don't get the "bandit in a light wind" crap to quite the same extent. I'm sure it still happens that some boats do better in some conditions, but not to the same extent. This would mean fairer racing for cats, so it would breed less bad feeling and "it doesn't matter, its only a handicap race" stuff.

Have to say I'm in a bit of fleet dilemma myself. My local club Island Barn is less than a mile as the crow flies (3 miles, 5mins by car). It has good relatively clean wind for an inland location, which is why I'm a member there sailing a 1972 floppy GRP Solo. I bought the Solo cheaply as I wanted to test if it is the right class for me. The Solo fleet racing is actually very good and I've still got plenty to learn, but I've now realised that I'm just too physcially big for it, especially in light winds where I'm about as nimble as an elephant when trying to move (squeeze) around.

Tested a Phantom which was a revelation in comparison, so I just had to get one.  Nearest fleet is Frensham Pond which also happens to be a very nice club with very friendly and welcoming members. Problem is that it is at least 35 mins away outside of rush hour. So do I go for convenience of local club, but face handicap racing, or travel further to sail in a very active Phantom fleet????

Dilemma, dilemma....

Yes, it's a shame but...

As jwl said..............+ we would have to drive an awful long way to find a fleet that suits us even if we sailed any single trap symmetric (affordable).

My local club, which I drive past, insist on fleet results. They would put us in the "maverick" fleet which consists of 1 sometimes 2 boats.......although we'd be certain of silverware it wouldn't be very satisfying. To get any meaningful results I would either have to sail a Laser or a Cat

Both clubs I drive past have a reef and massive dump if the wind is above 4 and in the SW,  or either an underground boat park (take down mast every time) or a boat park on a busy town center beach.

So I travel to a private beach which is off the beaten track, a beach sheltered from the S.W. wind, 4 electric winches, large private car park, large camping area.

The nearest racing club in the other direction is Hythe Wink LOL

............fleet racing would be good but sadly it ain't happening, thats why I'm doing my bit at the club for improving the inadequate (works reasonably well on a big lake) PY system.

Which is about  mile away from home, it can take 5 minutes if there's heavy tourist traffic and/or a Boot Fair on Hythe Green.

We've got anything from half a dozen to a dozen Lasers littering up perfectly decent water being sailed by a variety of skill levels and ages.

Then we have a pretty mongrel mix; Couple of 470's, half a dozen L3ks, a five oh, RS500, MPS, Supernova, Phantom, Blaze, couple of 400's and five Contenders, occasional L4k and on a really good day we could get close to thirty boats now I guess. It's been improving since us Windsurfers taught them how to race and do stuff like be somewhere approaching the general start area at least when the gun goes and do it regularly same time every week regardless..

The house I currently own was chosen not for it's proximity to the Sailing club - which is about 12 minutes drive - but for it's proximity to two excellent pubs (both former regional Camra winners).  Each pub (the Elms and the Burton Bridge Brewery) is no more than 500 metres away

Edit: That should let the more enterprising of you triangulate my location!!

The BBB used to a regular watering hole when I used to ride with my local cycling club. Beer

I did move to HISC for class racing, and happily paid the premium for membership- I'd echo what Andy B said about its good points- but eventually went back to my "home" club and handicap racing when life became complicated/busy. My Father was looking for a mooring 40 years ago and got one at Portchester, and we've both graduated back there in the end (I've come and gone several times as lifestyle changed). I guess the combination of friendly atmosphere, familiar surroundings, and people you've grown up and grown old with, plus a club that basically does what you want it to do is what draws us back. In the end I sail for fun rather than sail to win, and I have a lot of fun at Portchy! Hayling was good though....
