as your blog lacks a comments feature (why? all good blogs allow comments...)Is it perhaps that "lower tech" dinghies are less careful about rope choice? Exact rope selection is taken seriously by most in the B14s, with targeted use of covers/stripping of covers where they're not needed, much splicing together of disimilar ropes etc, serious amounts of dyneema (our current main halyard is handy as emergency cheese slicer) and so on. I'd guess it's taken even more seriously in the 5ohs, I14s, Merlins and other string-fetish boats.

Looking at Johns link, the photo shows what looks like Marlow Fusion.
It's light weight even when wet as it has a low water take up. Nice and flexible, goes through blocks well.
I use 8mm on our boat (Laser 2) for what it's worth, each class seems to have it's own preferances though. Edited by GK.LaserII - 09 Feb 11 at 5:32pm |

The mainsheet I am currently testing is Maffioli swift core 6mm.

Has this stuff disappeared from the chandlers or does it go under a different name now? |

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

The Fusion and Maffioli are remarkably similar, are you going to (or have you) test the Fusion?
How do they compare? Edited by GK.LaserII - 09 Feb 11 at 6:39pm |

as i'm a young laser radial sailor at the top end of the weight range for a radial and nearly the desired weight for a standard what would the best medium wind mainsheet thickness be?

I use the same thickness of mainsheet whatever the wind strength, this way you don't get stuck withe the wrong mainsheet if the wind speed changes...
