Bugger, just lost an essay!
I think its great you're putting your money where you're mouth is - and very funny to see how fast you are back tracking on how easy it is to knock out a good boat in a couple of weeks!
In my opinion that design will be heavy and hard to manoeuvre. The key thing is whether the extra sail area that the very stable hull allows will compensate for the very high drag of the hull form. Personally I doubt it, but I hope you prove me wrong!
The WSA is about twice that of a Laser. That will be very hard to design out as it is inherent in the geometry of the hull, but possibly with some trim and heel it can be reduced. Luckily, it can carry twice as much sail as a Laser, but that too comes with downsides in terms of cost, weight and handling. Edited by Peaky - 20 Jan 11 at 8:52pm |

Anyway next time I chance a visit to those parts, it will be via Swanley to Brands, on my own(fast VTwin-m'bike). That way one can make a swift departure after.

I would think gybing the kite single handed at the same time as changing over the toed-in centreboards will be a tad challenging too... It looks to me that f you took away all the bits that are not helping, you'd be left with a catamaran. Historically tunnel hulls are mostly about trying to operate as a cat within monohull class rules aren't they? (excluding serious power boats) That leaves the question of 'why don't we all want cats?' I admire the open-minded thinking, but I think I've lost sight of the problem it is trying to solve! Or maybe it's just not the problem I hoped might be solved- cheap 'RS700 killer' that can be short tacked up a shallow channel by a codger of limited talent. BTW, what are Vortexes (Vortices?) like in lumpy water? Can't recall seeing one on the coast... |

Well it is the Rs700/MPS I've got my eye on, wether it can be done sat down and cheap, I doubt and short tacking up a shallow channel wasn't in my cross hairs, my issues are short steep 'orrible waves, a viscious shore dump and no desire to spend time practising. Your comments so far have been to do with actually the wrong set of drawings that bear the title of this thread, you'll have to go back to the beginning of it and read the relevant bits. Vortexes, like all Cats are likely to dip a lee bow in our water, with the resultant over the handlebars, something I have a distinct aversion to, hence the monobow.

Is it me, or does the design look a lot like some jet ski hulls?
sorry to use bad language...I couldn't find a better way to express myself. |

Is it going to be wider than a wide dinghy like a Merlin or N12, does that mean two berths not one?

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

It's worked out about 2m wide, the split in .67 mtr bits, the hulls at the rear are .67 so is the gap in the middle so by the time it's splayed a bit it was 2.01 then with the racks either side it should be about 2.60.
I think Dan's narrowing it down a bit to reduce the wetted surface. Yes , I guess there will be enough room for two but that's not the intention, the extra width is to make up for light folk not having the leverage and to ensure it stays upright with a large amount of canvas. I suppose it could be made modular to suit one or two, now there's a thought, one concept you just decide what you want it to be. Single handed hiker, Trapeze, or Twin. It's conceivable I guess. If the darn thing works of course.

Graham,
I can't for the life of me remember if you dislike the "High Performance Sailing" book by Frank Bethwaite or not.
However, I dug it out last night and read the chapter on "HULLS" with your project in mind and there was a lot of stuff in there about waves and the drag of a hull etc.
I really think it would be worth a read.
Cheers
