SMODs usually have
single sourcing of key equipment – hull, spars, foils, sails. This keeps these items consistent and arguably
fairer and more economic. It certainly
stops the pressure to have multiple cuts of sails and for periodic tweaking of
hull shape ’within the rules’. The
rules simply reflect this model of equipment supply. Some SMODs will have very tightly defined
rules beyond these key items; almost defining what ropes can be used for racing. Others, and ICON will be one of them, will
allow a certain amount of personalization
in areas such as the mainsheet set-up.
(We recognize that some may not get on with ‘off boom sheeting’ for
example !) . Defined hull weight
? – Yes – with correctors if needed – bonded in during the final build …. To avoid
that inevitable temptation …. Manufacturers veto –
Yes as it is a SMOD but for ICON if you want to replace minor items such as
blocks with your favorite no problem provided they approximate to the ‘standard’
one. In this respect it will be little different
to a host of other mainstream SMODs.
Well run SMODs classes are managed by the manufacturer with a lot of CA
input – why would they ignore useful input.
Both CA and manufacturer should share similar goals, promotion and
expansion of the class. It should also be
remembered that many traditional CA run classes still have to get approval for
changes by the original designer who may well be external to the class. In this respect there is little difference
between SMODs and these CA managed classes as the ‘designer’ is often the SMOD manufacturer involved. Where does
development stop ? - When you launch it
if you are sensible. Periodic major
reviews aside the SMOD model is intended for those who want a defined standard package
for racing. If you lean towards a lot of
incremental personalization then the development classes are the ones to go after. The thing about the
UK is that there is a lot of choice – development, traditional ‘one-design’ and
SMOD classes. If you don’t like one
approach then you can switch. If we get it right ICON will offer a real alternative with a high specification at a very affordable price ... soon now. Mike L. (Cirrus) |

How do you start off a new class in terms of equipment rules?
Will the Icon have a defined hull weight with correctors?
Will the manufacturer have a veto on changes to fittings etc?
It must be hard to decide where development stops and SMOD begins.
How do you limit the risks in terms of later boats moving the goalposts?
I'm not personally looking for a kiteless boat, but I think this could turn out to be a milestone.

Hi folks,
There is now a Yahoo Groups page setup to discuss the development of the Icon.
I would urge anyone interested in the boat to register with the group (it takes less than a minute). This is YOUR opportunity to try to influence the final spec, ask questions and give feedback in a focussed environment.
Some things are now fixed, but there is still much to decide. So if you're thinking this could be the boat for you, this is a great chance to make it just the way you like it.

Will there be an open day with the chance of sailing the boat perhaps?
Hi Matt - Yes there will be plenty of opportunities. We do need some time first to get the fit-out and rig optimised after the first production ulls are produced but I'm as keen as anyone to see the first reactions to Icon. We think it will surprise many... well it will if we have got it right ! We are not giving everything away either just yet - otherwise there will be very little to say when Icon is formally aunched. As soon as possible we will be organising some 'try an Icon' days and boats will be available to visit clubs that have a particular interest in the boat. Mike L. |

Cheers - When you've put the first scratch on it though.

Um, about 6 weeks hopefully give or take a little bit, although it will still be in 'snagging' phase at that point. You're very welcome to have a sail once I get it.

I wish I could take the credit James, but its not my doing.
The 'mermaid's tail' pattern is the result of the two grades of non-slip - grippier where you're feet spend most of their time and smoother at the back and on the centreboard case. It won't show up so well in white of course, but I think it looks funky!
