Ian,
FWIW i think you are right.  If i were buying a brand new 505 kite i wouldn't opt for the Monster Max kite, just the monster.  The Monster Max is a real, well monster.  The 505 however carries the kite well, its managable and was needed to keep the class where it is today.  It may look out of proportion but it works (and i agree it does).  If your wiring up wind, then you wire down.  If its marginal you soak traditional symetric style.  I guess thats what i was trying say is/was that i dont see the point in massive assy kites if you can't put the power down.  Anyway with our weight in the boat we need the rag to get going!!!  But when we do woossshhh its awesome!

I'm with you all the way on, why do we have to have such big kites, but its no way just an RS problem. And at least half the people on this forum seem to think bigger is better so perhaps they are right any way.

As for boats with kites that look to big, take a look at the 505, now thats  a kite thats way out of proportion !  Wink

Absolutely right Jimbo.  You sail your boat because you love it, it ticks your boxes and puts a smile on your face.  Its deffinately not suited to Southe cerney anymore then a 5oh is suited to Tewkesbury.  But hey! Who cares.  The D-one seems to have a load more righting moment the the 100 (and the 100 loads more then the Vareo)  and as such i would think it could hold a tighter kite leg even with its bigger kite.  But i have sailed neither so i can't really comment.
I still dont understand RS's need for such massive kites, when their customer base seems to be the local club pit sailer and circuit sailors.  But it ain't broke as long as its being pushed so why fix it??

I think the problem with the 700 is it suffers from to much rag, which i must admit i thought would be the problem with the 100.  The 700 has a massive mainsail where as the musto doesn't which i am guessing makes it slightly easier to gybe.
For me the 100 kite looks too big for its righting moment, which is fine for true W/L racing, but club cans courses its going to struggle on a tight leg!  The trouble is most people in the Uk sail on restricted ponds, where true W/L racing isn't really an option.

As I recall, doesn't the 700 suffer with a more punitive Handicap, yet is constantly bettered by MPS's in competitions, that's what put me off, back in the day when I thought I could, if I tried hard enough..

Thank you for your messages.  I have arranged to see a second hand RS100 later this week and will hopefully get to sail her too.  The D-One looks a like a fantastic dinghy however after some consideration I think the RS100 might suit me better and this will be my first option.

I think the RS100 ticks all the boxes above, and by saying that I am not saying the D-One does not, but simply the fact that the RS100 has been around half as long and sold twice as many would suggest to me what the 'safer option' is, especially for a UK sailor.  That said, if you have intentions to travel around Europe specifically Italy, then the D-One seems to have laid on an impressive line of glamour venues in its short history to date.

When thinking long term resale values and how the class is going to develop in the future, it could be worth looking at the Musto Skiff and RS700.

From an outsiders view (an Asymetric Canoe sailor) it would appear - RS700 launched with lots of PR and advertising from RS, initially sold more boats and had bigger open/nationals turnouts than the Musto. However, nearly ten years on, the Musto has grown to be a truly international class, the sailors realised it is the true thorough bred of the two, and generally the majority of better sailors moved to the Skiff. Now the Musto has the bigger turnouts 70 boats vs 34(?), plus has anyone ever seen a cheap Musto for sale - less than £4.5k? I haven't, but there have been loads of 700's advertised for less than £3k.

Alternativly, if you want a hiking boat with a 'mans' kite, that's a bit more challenging, there's alway the canoe to look at... Wink

Wow I never realised how complicated choosing a boat can be!

Me I prefer the easy aproach:

1) Read all the test reviews on the D1 - all good it seems.

2) Phone up Rodney at Sountouched who takes my Finn in PX.

3) Picks up D1, and frankly, its everything the reviews said i.e. awesome!

Is the RS100 better?  Well if it is it must be some boat, cos every time I sail the D1 I come back grinning from ear to ear.
