I went out on a Topper Vibe for the first time. It's a new boat for the helm too and he wanted to give it a try with a crew who's not afraid of swimming. Just as well because we capsized twice! It was in a NE force 5 with big gusts, that's my excuse anyway.
Can anyone who has sailed a Topper Vibe give advice / tips? Forget the Buy-another-boat-I-wouldn't-be-seen-dead-in-one-of-these type of advice, this is the boat I'm supposed to crew, I haven't got a choice!
Cheers!

I remmeber doing a Topper open a few years ago at Hunts, I was the oldest and fattest sailor there by a long way, still managed a top 10 in the first race (in virtually no wind) and came 11th or 12th overall. Was a great laugh.
On to the weekend just gone I managed to get out for 1 race and have a great time. Had a good battle with our young radial squad member, managed to beat him over the finish line though.

Did my 1st ever Topper open (at the tender age of 41!). One of my Kids group didn't feel well on the Sunday morning, so the others ganged up on me to "put my money where my mouth is". Had a hoot! Fleet of 64 at Chichester and I came 18th overall (including a 6th!). It was blowing strong, so my 13st 8 stood me in good stead upwind, but planing and surfing just wasn't happening on the reaches/runs.
Got to say that the standard at the top of the fleet is extremely good - excellent news for the class and the future of UK sailing. Including me there were 3 adults out there, which is also good for the class I guess.
Brilliant fun

We got our mast back from the doctor. Bit of a f*** up to be honest. Not sure why we didn't send the rigging with it when it went to be repaired, but anyway, threading three halyards should be pretty easy. Done it plenty in the past.
Balls.
Couldn't get them past the repair location.
Tried EVERYTHING.
Missed the first day of Tide Ride (five races) because of it. Sickening- looked awesome out there.
Borrowed an alloy rig for Sunday
Sent the spin halyard up inside just before we launched. Missed race 6
Got on the water (having done mast back down, re thread and re rig in about twenty minutes) to arrive for the start sequence of race 7. Were OK (despite untuned very bent alloy rig, no downhaul and being ginger on the kicker as boom was soft (had to borrow a boom with a square hole as newer mast have round fitting- so our boom does too) upwind, but weren't being clever down- which is a problem when you've got a lot more gybes to do
Just after race 8, noticed tiller extension joint was parting company.
2 races out of ten. Balls.

Had a great sail at Draycote this Sunday in the 5oh, F3 gusting 4. No racing just trying to set up the new mast before the 5oh winter series. Kite haliard to long, jib Halyard needs lengthening. Kite halyard chaffing somewhere (nearly snapped) our gybing was shocking and needs some work, but we were getting there by the end of the day.
The 505 is without doubt the best all round boat i have ever sailed. Its fast up and downwind, stable, powerful but yet manageable!! I'm hooked!

Got some sort of fluey hacky cough lurgy kept me up all night, but it was such a nice day, sunny warm and freshening breeze, kind of summers last blast, so went out anyway. Capsized straight after the launch managed to right it without being spat back up the beach, then hung around for seemingly eons whilst the race box flapped about with start sequences that simply petered out. The course was too tight for the kite, so pretty much brought up the rear until the run, then having launched it, the wind dropped only to return mid gybe with a massive gust which set me on a course of further capsizes ending up in an unusual mast close encounter with the bottom, decided it was me not being 100% on par and retired with another capsize ten foot from the beach as I was coming ashore - nightmare.
It was a bit breezy and wavey but nothing horrendous, in fact could be argued perfect sailing conditions am now feeling even rougher and more depressed at being useless in that boat and to rub more salt in the wound got lapped by my Blaze, cheeker fecker sailed right over my rig as I was trying to right the boat. No doubt I'll get over it, but right now I feel like chucking the whole single handed thing in.

Went down the club today to tinker and perhaps sail. Sailing out of the question as the sea was "Hastings Pier Soup". Small bits and big bits littered the whole Bay.......no sailing while that stuffs around
![]() A complete shame about the Pier, it was (or under it was) the only form of sex education available in the 70's.
