I've been sailing a laser for a couple of years now after getting back into dinghy sailing.  (I used to sail moths in my youth, but they're a bit different these days and I've spent the last ten years or so crewing on yachts, mainly J-24s and want to do more dinghy sailing, but the Laser just isn't really challenging me anymore).

I was very interested in the D-One when I first found out about it, however money was a little tight at the time so I didn't take it forward.  Whilst I am still interested in the D-One it seems the RS100 has become very popular, which is obviously tempting for all manner of reasons.

Can anyone let me know the differences between the two?  I'm not a brilliant sailor by any standards, but I want a boat that challenges me and offers me good competition.

Well the D-One is as popular in Europe as the 100 is ,at the moment, in the UK.
The D-one is starting to take off in UK.
I thoroughly suggest trying both boats out.
I have had a D-One for the last year and you can come and sail it to see what you think, or arrange a demo from Rodney Cobb the UK dealer. Check out the D-One thread on this forum for his details.

Don't listen to others sail them both and decide what suits you best.

There are many differences between the 2 boats, build materials for one, the D-one is all carbon.
P.M. for details

Tim is right - try both options and see what suits you best.  I love my RS100, and I am by no means a great sailor.

Both boates have reched the point where races can attract 30 or 40 boats, which is good.   The RS100 seems more popular in the UK and the D1 is more based in 'continental europe'.  In some senses it is a shame that both exist because a single fleet would be awesome.

You could always try the Vareo?

RS Build and Design Quality, established circuit, cheaper, blah blah ..

Not to put a downer on the class but there was only 20 at the Nationals and even worse only 5 at the Inlands at Grafham last weekend.

Things like the RS100 and the D1 are doing to the Vareo what the 700 did to the 600, pushing them out of the market.

As for a hiking single hander I would be more tempted by the RS300 TBH. Same handicap as the 100 but with 1 less sail to worry about. Plus the class is growing again with new boats currently being built.

That may be so, but is it not a cheap way into single handed assymetric sailing, which is what it seems would be best for this chap?

For half the money of a 100/D1 he could have a decent quality boat, get the hang of it and decide if he really wants the 2nd sail or not, and sell up and lose .. well .. almost nothing! (Depreciation of a brand new boat vs a 4 year old boat?)

I'm gonna hold onto the Vareo then and wait for someone to make a foiling kit and a sexy looking new mainsail!  Tongue

Edit - and ignore the Grafham results, there are scary shrimp in the reservoir, who would *want* to sail there atm and risk taking them home ..

As I see it, it's not necessarily a try it see if you like it scenario, it depends on two things, how much cash you are willing to part with and where you sail, plus how heavy you are.

D1 = minted + inland reservoir /estuary + 'big'boy.
RS100 = comfortable + coastal + inland/estuary + wider rider weight range.
Neither I imagine would suit puddles.

The D1 imo is blighted (for coastal launches)by a daggerboard and fixed rudder but I'd imagine an otherwise easier boat to sail. It appears however to be a more 'quality' product with better 'gizmos' and is faster in casual hands. However it aint everybody's asthetic cup of tea.

The RS100 is 'pretty' has the advantage of centreboard and kick up rudder but is tippy. It does however cater better for light sailors with the smaller rig, but you need to be a better (and probably heavier) helm than 'my none laser experienced 67 kgs' to get the best out of it.

Coor blimey GRF, that's incorrect on a few levels....
Let's take the D-One "big" boy first....
I have race all year against a range of weight crew, at Valencia last week Agustine won the regatta, as he did in the windy Alassio event, and he is 70kgs. There were other guys in the top ten at 100kgs as well.
Personally I was racing upwind next to a lady who weighed in at 50kgs and we were exactly the same speed and I am 93kgs, obviously she was faster and deeper offwind.
The wings are perfect for "comfortable" hiking with equalization across a huge weight range as has been demonstrated this year.

"Blighted (for coastal launches)"....Nope, at Alassio it was an on shore breeze and a fleet of 25 launched perfectly.

It is deffo advisable to try both to see for yourself.

Graham, I am going to bring my boat to your club one day, and give you a go.

How can it be incorrect? It's my considered opinion, not presented as fact, it's an opinion, your job as fanboy(s) is to change it.

You wont, cos I'll insist you get your 50kg woman to launch it into the teeth of a fresh force five breeze off our beach.

It won't happen, you'll end up with a broke boat, she'll be in her rightful place getting Maytagged.
