Sorry been busy at work and new forum software keeps loggin me out (re-typed this 3 times)….grrrr In answer to your question… They are completely different boats. I don’t say that lightly, they may fit into the “single handed hiking asymmetric” label but they couldn’t be more different if they tried. I had only ever sailed the prototype 100 before that’s why I had a go. Sailing a new boat makes a completely new set of muscles start working, and with the 10.2 rig I was certainly getting a proper work out, and after 3 races in that wind I knew I wasn’t up for another long one, but I started it, sailed the first beat (went the wrong way tbh) rounded the windward, hoisted the kite, looked behind me and saw “black” (lots more wind), in front was a wall of white (upturned hulls), I dropped the kite and limped home to nurse my aching/cramping muscles (wimp). I posted one good result (6th in first race) and the rest not too far off the pace until I kept tipping it in, once just blown flat upwind rounding the leeward, and the others on the gybes, when the wings dig in you’re in trouble. Trying to get through the “gate from hell” downwind to make the finish line was difficult if in a huge gust and in one race having beaten Mr Childs upwind and had a good downwind leg I gybed to make the gate, wings dug in and there I sat, spinny flogging, main out to the max, me fully hiked / perched on the side, half capsized, half not, and the mob creamed passed to the finish. I had to wait until the lull so I could flatten it off (spinny still hoisted) to make the finish line….grrrr RS’s “Junior” wanted to borrow the boat on Sunday, so I let him have a go. Funniest moment would have to be on the start line with Demo’s port biased line gap that shut with the shift and the only option was a “sambuka” induced spectacular piss in….made me chuckle. The main difference would be the lack of wings on the 100, you have to keep it really flat to avoid making mistakes. I would make the kicker and downhaul control lines longer (deffo) and thicker (maybe) as I found to get a grip I needed to wrap lines around my hand for purchase. They needed adjusting all through the race, a lot. I am not surprised that people are gravitating to the 8.4 rig, however it is obviously possible to make the 10.2 shift as well. For info, I was sailing on hole 3 on the stays and number 4 on the “mast gate ram thing” (technical term). If I had sailed on Sunday I would have dropped it down to hole 2 and maybe move the ram lower as well, however TBH I was maxed out on kicker so I am not sure what difference it would have made??? If you haven’t already done it, I thoroughly recommend the elastic on the horse at the back, it totally gets rid of the annoying mainsheet round tiller problem, if you are in the habit (and you probably are) or over steering through tacks or gybes. Now I’m off to Alassio for the last Volvo Cup D-One event before Gold cup in

So are you a politician?
![]() I joke of course - pleased that the 100 is so good you want to sail it in all conditions.

Hey Tim, now you have taken part in d1 and 100 events this season what are your thoughts on both boats and their differences on the race course? You must be one of the only folks with the experience of both at that level.

Graeme,
Being one of the Parkstone 'pussies' I thought you'd like a response. I find the mix of good, enjoyable, competitive sailing mixed with good socials is what makes a good event. Having a young family who I generally don't see enough as it is makes my priorities shift from the days I used to follow most of your old school rules to trying to find a balanced mix that gives me time to enjoy sailing, social and family. This doesn't make my view right and your view wrong, but hopefully addresses the one sided view currently on offer. Phil J
