ahaa.....someone else who has tried mounting a speed puck and the wierd 3m velcro stuff.

I haven't started looking seriously hard yet as been too busy...but last night got an email from a supplier who only sold it by the roll....£325 per roll.

Ok so.....any idea where to get a "little" puck sized bit of 3m tape in the UK?

What do you guys think?

I'm only 5'8" and about 10.5 stone (approx 67kg) and obviously on the
8.4 sailing on the sea. I think if your 6'3 and 80kg you should be
seriously considering the 10.2 as the 8.4 will seem pretty small alot of
the time.

Cheers,

Keith.

What do I think ?..............you boys need to indulge in some serious pie
eating !!!!!

Only joking - its going to be VERY interesting to see how the various rig
sizes and body weights pan out at the Nationals.

I'm 90kg (in my pants !) and 6'1" (in my orthopedic shoes) and I will be
using the 10.2. Having initially got caned by the 10.2 (nowhere near
enough downhaul) I have now got to grips with it in pretty much all
conditions and sadly my 8.4 is still sitting in its bag unused !

Applying a LOT of controls (and I mean a LOT) does very effectively
depower the sail but I am not sure this would be quicker than using the
8.4 as there is then quite a lot of parasitic drag and you get to a point
where, although you are in control, you cant effectively get the power
down and driving the boat forward - don't think this is fast ! You do have
the advantage, however, that if it is gusty you can ride out the gusts and
then easily power up in the lulls.

As said above I don't think it makes any difference to downwind speed
what main you are on as the kite is doing the work and the main is
effectively just following. If you are overpowered it is close reaching
without the kite where you will really suffer - but hopefully non of that at
the Nationals !!

Fair point Andrew. You have experience of the 10.2 so it sounds like its a big step up from the 8.4.

Its getting interesting seeing what weight may be optimal over a range of conditions for both rigs.

Cheers, Keith.

Hmmm, I would say stick with the 8.4 for now
and concentrate on eating some pies. Tim
Weedon was sailing an 8.4 at Fed Week at
87kg (apparently) and did really well across
all conditions with the only noticeable drop in
performance being when the wind really got
up. I'm 95kg and 6'2" and consider the 10.2 a
challenge (maybe something to do with the
prevalence of F4-5 conditions since I've
bought the boat).
Remember that the only time when the
mainsail size will have an impact on speed is
upwind, it's largely redundant once the kite is
up.

That is my worry, my test sail was in very gusty and shifty winds up to about 18 knots, that was in the 10.2 and it caught me off guard a couple of times.  Perhaps this wouldnt be the case on the sea?

Any recommendations on a fairly basic one ?

Hi Simon,

Best portable GPS for sailing in the Navi GT-31

http://gps-speed.co.uk/gps-speed-windsurf.html

By far the best unit out there and now the only one recommended by
gps.-speedsailing.com for windsurf and kitesurf speed sailing.

Much better value, more reliable and a lot more accurate that the
previous Garmin Foretrex type units.

You can download GPS Action Replay from gps-speedsurfing.com and
this offers excellent analysis of the data including track plotting onto
google maps and important for sailing, excellent VMG analysis.

Its very easy to exchange tracks with your mates and re-run the race
(playing the tracks simultaneously) - good fun and very useful to see
where you lost out or gained !

There is another unit (seen it on the Sail Racer homepage) which is a data
logger but with a built in mobile transmitter using a tracking tariff - not
used this yet but with a bit of setting up you can relay your position to a
PC (could be in the Clubhouse) so those ashore can follow the race.

Hope this helps !

chris
