it may look ugly to you BUT,

if you want to to win races on small lakes or rivers its the best boat to have.

i sail on a small lake and until this year most of the races were won by national 12s or supernovas.

this year two sailors got british moths and they now are wining a lot of races.

please dont ' diss' the boat just because it looks strange.

.......and remember the thread is titled Design Failures not Design Aesthetics.

As I understand it the British Moth has performed to it's original design brief perfectly for many years and has probably not been surpassed.

Every time one canes my ass I seem to find its looks strangely alluring... though not last night cos' we gave it a right walloping.... but it was blowing a bit.

And this, to judge by your avatar, from a person who sails an over-priced clinker rowing boat with sails!

Sorry, couldn't resist that; I love Merlins and 12 really (though the 12's have at least moved on from the clinker rowing-boat look ). But I did feel a bit hurt on behalf of the British Moth - as a child of the scow era, I thought it looked pretty cool when I first saw one, if a bit slow  )

Firstly its not clinker built... they are for old people
who have done their backs in and also 12s have a very
favourable handicap for winning races plus they look good.
And sorry about the british moth comment I just don't like
them.

To be fair if you read again what was said, MM did go on to describe the Merlin as "clinker (rowing boat) look." ie fake clinker.

In my experience true clinker built boats are more likely to be the cause of back problems due to their weight rather than be the boat of choice of "old people who have done their backs in".....if of course thats what you really mean't

From my distant youth, for me it has to be the Skipper12 or 14, both as bad, should be in a bathroom not on the water. They had a strange railing round the bow and could be bought with optional cushions. No, I didn't own one but knew people who did, I sailed an Int.Moth at the time, just to get the story right. Unfortunately I see one upside down in a garden driving to work every morning, it never moves, just like when they were on the water.

As I recall the Skipper was a range of craft that was going to revolutionise the world of small boat sailing? I think it sold reasonably well in its formative years but quickly fell out of favour.

Where I sail fairly regularly on the coast there is a fellow who sails the larger dayboat version (Skipper 17) which has a cuddy on the front. To be fair it carries a fair amount of sail which he never seems to reef and it goes OK (all things being relative of course!)

There were very much the equivalent of the rotomoulds of their day, and gathered a similar amount of disdain. Aesthetically they weren't great, but I never sailed one to know whether they were bad boats or not. In those days I wouldn't have wanted to be seen dead in something as uncool as that, but hopefully I've grown up a bit since then.

The Otter (Glass Bubble as originally made) was pretty
horrible but over 1100 were made so I'm not sure it
constitutes a design failure..
