Sunday, 3rd in a row now plus 15 kts, last couple of weeks I'd failed to
finish, this week I was determined to get round.

And I had a plan at least.

So I got a fair start and watched as a laser 2 pulled surely and steadily away
from me upwind, followed by the entire mackerel fleet AND my mate in his
Phantom.
Now he rarely sees me off, but windsurfing when it's this breezy we have a
right battle so it seemed fitting that he'd reach the weather mark ahead and
I overstood a bit despite a fair tide, not wanting a repeat of previous irons
encounters at the top mark.

Bugger me if it wasn't a carbon copy of last weeks ill fated reach with the
wing mark quite high and certainly don't even think about the kite. So I went
high initially having dumped the kicker for the bear off, held my own by
climbing then diving then climbing then diving, didn't get past anyone but
didn't fall back and managed to take the first gybe casualty then reach for
the kite on the 2nd broader reach, that the Alto would have crucified
everyone on.

But woa, couldn't hold it at all and had to bear off and off further whilst
creaming the tops of waves, finally dumping it and having to climb back to
where I left my chum as we round the bottom mark, he goes inshore I go out
to sea .

Another beat and this time I gained a bit think I crossed him on Port, then
the bear away onto the run and here was where I'm going to get medieval on
his ass..

Standing astride the gunwhale panicking to get onto the plate, I'm thinking
What went wrong there then, damn forgot to dump the kicker, I'm facing back
the way I'd just come, got it back round then tearing down the run I faltered
the hoist, ran straight over the kite, in again, it's easy to get back in with the
kite as a sea anchor and facing back upwind manage to pull it back in the
chute and off again, by this time they're well ahead of me.

Finally I get it all together and enjoy a fairly sure kite run which was over all
too soon and required a quick drop then a gybe and round up.

AS I swam to the boat, I thought feck it, this is going to be tricky and the
right, reright, right again started, then I thought about a video I'd seen on SA
where the dude sank the mast to weather so I did whilst managed to get
astride the plate. Stood right next to the hull so it wouldn't come up until I
wanted it to, then edged out and just as it started up, dived over the gunwhale
into the bottom of the boat as the boom swished over, I am definitely going
to wear a helmet in future. I think helmets are more use than buoyancy vest
tbh and as if to prove the point a couple of tacks later smacked my head on
the boom.

By now I'm sailing a lonely race bringing up the rear, the entire fleet
having gone past, but I'd learned a few things, proved a couple of points, so
carried on and with no further incidents as it turned out, even clawed a
couple of places back.

Had two more blinding spinnaker runs, only time I could use it was on the
run and then pretty much straight to the mark, and when the hooter finally
went I have to say it tasted better than a bullet in lessor wind.

A Good day and lessons learned..

A great couple of days for me on the Medway.

Friday Dragons in a F6, white water everywhere and bath fulls of water over the side when we fluffed tacks.  All rather too exciting, we declined the second race and had a beer instead.  Its probably just as well since my finger hurt like hell as I think I'd dislocated it during one bad tack, but it snapped back into shape.

Sunday Alto.  I won the Fast Handicap first time out in this easy to sail fast boat.  To tell the truth the competition was not great with only a half dozen boats out and the gusty nature of the wind near the start and finish made it difficult for the twin trap boats and the Musto Skiff.  So chuffed were we with the boat that we capsised it in the afternoon - to find out how easy it is to right!

If you want to know more there's an Alto thread with a fuller description on this site, and here's a picture just before the start of the afternoon race.  Sun and breeze just doesn't get much better.

This weekend Dan fancied another bash in the Alto see if we couldn't
repeat last weeks glory..

It was blowing pretty much dead offshore from the NNW when we got
there, but with the sun out, the clouds looking a little askew we
reckoned it would swing round more to the NE so the battle plan was
stay middle and right.

A line start offshore saw us clear at the pin end and flying as we went
up the beat we were initially getting lifted and pretty much had the
fleet covered. MPS 505 RS500 470 under us and the RS400 to weather
but trailing as we forged on.

About 2/3rds up there was a bit of a progessive knock back to NW so
the MPS at the lee end started to appear to nose ahead with the 505
still with him, at this stage it was nothing dramatic and even now I'm
kicking myself for what happened next. You just don't do it on the
first beat but my arrogance can know no bounds at times, I just had to
go for the big one, bang over now, it'll swing back and we'll be so far
ahead it'll make their eyes water says I as I banged the helm down...

It came back alright, but so far back they all got lifted clean to the
mark and we were overstood to the point we're considering the kite as
we went round last of the fast handicappers...

You just don't do it.. never do stuff like that on the first beat, why why
why... the rest of the race was then battling back in gusty shifty stuff,
the MPS and the 505 creamed us deservedly so, then the girls in the
470 & 500 who so enjoy it when I come unstuck gave me my just
tongue lashing and home I went with my tail twixt my legs..

What's that saying pride before a fall?

505 John (who fixed my rig last week and who'll probably be reading
this, gloating, even though it was probably the pain from when he
broke my rib that made me do such a stupid thing) has had his
revenge... I sailed like a dick.

Another weekend, another caning, really gusty NErly rcae got abandoned when
the wing mark blew out to sea.

Had a lot of trouble handling the RS100.

Finally got my 'trailguru' iphone app to post after the event.

It's going to be quite useful in future on more calm events..

Crikey Graeme, were you drunk?

The waves no doubt limited your top speed to 23 kph. We had 31kph out of the Laser 3000 yesterday on the run, and my crew wasn't even on the wire at the time!
