Took the Icon out two up yesterday for club racing. Below is link to video on U-tube of the result. Don't expect much from video, was an on board camera with limited.angle of view.
First time I have sailed the boat with Mike with the Carbon Stick and approx 13m2 sail area. Still very much at development stage but went like a rocket at times! Icon Test Sail |

Got any pics of the X boats setup? Surely a boomerang kicker should be called a boomervang?! Edited by Peaky |

Would you get enough travel in the blocks with this system? If it was more of a boomerang that pivoted on the boom near the gooseneck it would act like a lever and not need so many pulleys? |

... and this is a prototype design we are talking about .. you don't go to carbon unless the design is ergonomically right first unless you have money to burn. The material choice comes later.

Mike, It's the 21st century. Think about about a carbon boomerang. Cheers. |

Hi
I am following this thread with interest. We already get laser cut s/s custom parts made already. So if any of you bright mechanical design engineers out there want to do the calcs and design us a good boomer prototype we'll get a couple made and test them as soon as available. We have a few related ideas to throw into the mix as well... maybe contact me direct - see www.cirrusrace.com for contact info Mike L. (aka Cirrus) |

We use boomerang kickers on a certain 21ft keelboat. The idea is to clear the coackpit coaming, but as a side effect it does give the crew more room. They are made out of 6mm ali plate and have to be about 100mm wide at the corner to be strong enough. See also 'Tinley Kicker' on X-boats. |

I think I've got you. So it's basically a long, rigid strop from the boom to the purchase at the mast with a dod of elastic attached to the gooseneck to hold it the right way round.

The way i imagined it was to introduce something that
would create a gap in a normal rope kicker, get a boomerang and tie a rope to each end and pull tight, presuming the boomerang to be robust enough it should pull just as tight but create an air gap that the crew's head, sheet what ever could be pulled through without getting caught by the rope. Not used as a lever mechanism attached to the mast. |
