I've never been totally convinced about those...I have trouble working out in my head why they should be better than having an ordinary kicker anchored to the same point, which ought to be a bit lighter. You'd still have to reinforce the boom, but maybe not as much...

Wouldn't a carbon Kevlar boomerang kicker work, mount it
to the normal places and give you the same power and
flexibility but remove the killer diagonal line between
boom and mast

[edit] can't upload my sketch thanks to the crap software
this forum uses and chrome browser, the only browser on
this linux workstation

[edit2] installed Opera to see if that'll work!

woo hoo it does!

Any news as to whether you will use epoxy for the hull?

I like the idea of the boomerang kicker - any reason they aren't used more?

Spectacular strength required I should think... Lets think, according to some stats I just found on the net (http://msis.jsc.nasa.gov/sections/section04.htm#_4.9_STRENG TH) most men can pull about 40lbs with a moderately bent elbow. Then say a 16:1 kicker, that's 640lbs... That's a pretty substantial boomerang...

In the Firefly, the kicker is used to put tension on the forestay up wind. I've been trying to picture whether this arrangement still bends the mast in the same way? Must look up the class rules and then do a mock up. Anyone got a photo of a real one?

I would guess this is effected by the acuteness of the boomerang angle. If it were less say as an arc deflecting merely 9 inches this will give a lot more space for the crew and a whole lot less stress on the structural intergrity...

I guess all these alternatives cost a bit more than a bit of string, but the boomerany looks funky!
