It wasn't when I went there as a youngster but that was about 5 million years ago. http://www.hydrology.org.uk/Publications/exeter/62.pdf Never sailed there but would seriously like to. Just a bit of cruising. Edited by GK.LaserII |

According to yesterday's cheerful weather chappie, 2010 has been the driest on record (thus far) since 1926.
We've still got high water levels here at Draycote - 89% if ST can be believed - but I can't help thinking that a lot of reservoirs are going to be seriously depleted by the time the monsoon season starts (in August, usually whichever week you happen to have booked a seaside holiday). |

We get low water every day at Chichester, but thankfully it seems to top
itself up within a few hours. ![]() |

If you sail on a water which is already small then this drought is a real problem. Our reservoir is a feeder for the Peak Forrest canal and as such we are used to levels dropping throughout the season but I have never, in 18 years, seen it as low as this at this time of year. The water level has dropped about 2 1/2 m. with the surface area reduced by about a third giving us lovely sandy beaches. The interesting thing is that we can still set courses in the main body of the lake but start lines are more difficult. What we need is for this weather to break into two days of massive thunder storms, this has happened before and so much water pours in from the surrounding hills that the lake will gain about 1 m. a day. Until that tempest arrives we will continue to haul boats with our ever lengthening arms......

How do you keep the weed down now that is virtually impossible to put anything into a lake?

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

Oddly enough weed is never a problem. We do get water bistort as the season progresses but this never tangles. Water runs into the lake all the time and it drains all the time, perhaps this is the reason. What we do have are freshwater mussels being exposed and oyster catchers have appeared. Mussels, sand, oyster catchers, black headed gulls, cormorant and the sound of little waves breaking gently on the shore. Derbyshire rock anyone? |

The water level is down a little bit at Staunton Harold Sc but less than a metre. We now have lovely golden sandy beaches! The weed does seem to be growing a lot at the moment though, but once your 20-30 foot from the bank most of it disapears.
