Hello Alan, Too right - the more input the better particularly if you have experience of other similar boats and can provide the useful sort of comparison that you have. I am really keen to find out how people are sailing the boat upwind and the sheeting angle - this is all very new to me (other boats I sail dont have the same sort of input). Presently I am sheeting in till the traveller block just starts to pull away from the stop, then helming to keep the sail flowing to that angle. You can sheet a lot harder / go higher but for me that angle feels sweet. I think I am setting the outhaul slacker than you but keeping the top of the sail flat with a lot of kicker. On the kite launch I am struggling with the seated / one hand on tiller method (although my sailing buddies are Ok with that) and have ended up kneeling on cockpit floor steering with tiller end in small of my back using both arms for a very rapid launch. Would be great to see dome video of what everyone is doing. I have had a few kite snag issues but generally think these are over. Understand latest boats have a minor mod to eliminate the kite bunching behind the chute mouth and this is going to retro'ed onto earlier boats. PY wise reckon I am sailing the big sail to a figure just under 1000 - I am winning races in lighter breeze on PY (not great assy conditions) but am still getting to grips with the 100 and this type of boat full stop so am hoping for an improvement over time so results now are unduly flattering. Have to say its such a rewarding boat I have been going out evenings just for a drift around - and I previously loathed any sort of light wind sailing ! Edited by ChrisC |

Re upwind sheeting, pic of first race start yesterday, about 11mph. No idea whether thats too tight or whatever, so any experts please say.

Alan,
I'm not an expert !!!!!! Very interesting photo - a great start by the way and very nice trim ! You look to be sheeted a bit tighter than I have doing - traveller appears to be 100 to 150mm off the stop (would be good to see a higher res close up shot) and possibly as a result bottom battens maybe look a little bit hooked compared to the 300's, although could be an optical illusion. Any other shots ? Edited by ChrisC |

At the risk of sounding dimmer than usual...
It might just be the angle of the shot but the mast looks to be bending in a funny way! Strait at the top and bent at the bottom. EDIT: Could be a Gnav thing? Edited by Ross |

As Ross says, it might be the angle but...it looks almost 'S-shaped'. Are the spreaders a set length from RS or can you fiddle with them? Looks as though the mast is being dragged too far to windward at the spreaders.

Well just to chip in based on my limited experience (and skills) of sailing the 100 in the light winds of the last few days and weeks: I found the boat easy to rig and the instructions pretty clear. Minor things with the set up have been: I am still adjusting the arrangement of knots etc on the spinny halyard to make sure it is fully away when dropped. The centre turret does chafe the centreboard downhall - I have put tape on to 'soften' the edges of the turret. I also put tape on the bottom side of the end of the boom to stop it making small scratches on the transom. The velcro around the front of the genny sock could be fitted a bit better - I may be able to adjust it a bit though. - if there is a retro fit please let me know I love how adjustable the main is - the kicker and cunningham can be used to get a really fantastic sail shape. I am not sure though how to set the outhall properly - its not been a big issue, but I just haven't found how/where to guage the fullness I should have. In very light winds I have found that the top batten can be difficult to snap from one side to the other when tacking, but a bit more kicker seems to help with this. Upwind the boat can point really really high, but it feels 'happier' sailed a bit freer. I am not sure there is benefit in sheeting more tightly than is needed to get the traveller to the stopper, and actually think it may be quicker not even sheeting in quite that far. Like Chris and Keith I have been tending to hoist the genny with two hands. e.g., while steering with the tiller extension under my arm. I will need to practice the technique of hand over hand hoisting while holding the extension in my hand so that I don't steer all over the place! So far I have found gybing surprisingly / pleasingly easy, with the genny staying full almost throughout. There is still masses to learn and I am having fun. All tips welcome (from 100 owners and others) |
