Hmmmm, looks a nice enough frame, but for the money I'd want better than Tiagra groupset (read here; http://www.roadbikereview.com/mfr/shimano/groupos/PRD_27979_ 2497crx.aspx )

Seems a little on the heavy side too, but then I'm picky and a bit of a mingebag money-wise which is why I've built my own!

Anyone ( else ) doing the Round the Island by bike?   2100+ entrants last year. Like the sailing RTIR, there are always lots bikes in sight in front and behind.

IW Randonnee

100km, it's free! and it's not a race, but the fast guys do it about 3 hrs, I did about 5 last year.

Start at several points, inc near all the IW ferry ports ( from Lymington, Southampton and Portsmouth. )

No major climbs, but it goes up and down, and up and down, and... get the picture?  Nice scenery too.

Cube bikes are awesome imo. Firstly they look the dogs (which to be honest is essential) They do cost a fair bit though, but at the same time the profit margin for the dealer is pretty low too as they are specced out with excellent kit throughout. The missus was looking at getting a Cube mtb but funds don't allow at the moment, as soon as they do I am sure she will buy Cube though.

As to the particular bike in question, I'm no roadie so can't really comment!

Just wondered what other peoples views were?

In that price range and above I don't think there are any "bad" road bikes; it is just a matter of value for money.

Looks at the spec. of various bikes in that range and compare the kit.

I think the Boardmans from Halfords are probably the bust value for money sub £1000 as long as you don't expect much from Halfords in the way of service like you'd get from a bike shop.

I've put my Whyte 46 on
ebay
if any of you are looking for that sort of bike at the moment.

It's not in bad nick, but could probably do with a new chain, this side of the winter.

A good cure for Roadie Lycra lameness.

Andy,  Is the route suitable for a racing bike, or just mtb's and hybrids?  I'd love to bring my Ebay Special down for it's 1st big run.

It's a road route, except for a mile or so of hard gravelly cycle track along an old railway route. ( but there is an alternative road part to this if you want - nearly everyone does the track ) - and it's dodge the potholes on the smaller roads to make it more fun . My max speed last year 38mph, but avg ~13mph.

The majority of bikes are roadies ( at the front and middle ) with mtbs etc and cruisers further back.

There are other events on the IW during the year for mtbs that do go offroad up the big hills if that floats your boat.
