Stanley only actually had about 3 years in the limelight, starting in 87 with the Bloddy Mary, and ending in about 1990 when the Bistros took over. It was not a "revolutionary" design, but a lightly modified Iain Murray design. There is also a clue in the dates. The UK cherubs broke away from the Aus boats in 84, and then bumped the kite size further in 87, and as we all know it takes the PY system a few years to catch up with change. Now I'm not saying that banditry was at play here, but given the right conditions, a solid boat (which Stanley was), and a good crew (which Guy & Alex were), then it was a combination that was hard to beat.

I like.

I believe most of the negativity in this thread is from pople who havn't sailed Cherubs. Mainly made by the brainwashed and ignorant minority.

If you wan't to come a try a Cherub then come to Draycote this weekend, It's free! Several new boats will be there as well as older designs. Bring several pairs of pants.

A little longer than that: Guy and Alex did win the 1981, 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988 Nationals in Flat Stanley, and picked up a 2nd and 3rd in two of the intervening ones. As I remember there were a fair few other events they took the glassware home from, especially when they were at their peak in the mid 80s. In the first season of the Bistros Guy and Alex were still on the pace, as you'll rememember, but then Guy bought that *awful* set of sails and Alex was less committed to sailing.

I don't have the old magazines any more to check - my collection went to the Class archives, but I wouldn't be suprised if there were a Stokes Bay Pursuit or a Pompey Perisher in the mix. FS is a fair bit different from a standard Murray, but I agree: very much evolutionary rather than revolutionary.

JimC

It was an article published in Y&Y written by you in the late 80's comparing the legendary Flat Stanley to the new upstart Jonny Fart Pants that got me hooked and led to me buying my first boat aged 15. An original Murray design Cherub 2610 Charlie Don't Surf!!

So I owe you and Flat Stanley a big thank you!
