The RS100 Owners Thread

We have the capacity to deliver 200 boats by the end of October - we have sold to date 152 - with 6 for AUS and 2 more for Denmark hopefully about to be added, so round it to 160ish, of which roughly 100 are sold to UK. That leaves 40 or so to sell, of which Charlie thinks the UK is good for another 20 or so this year: Mind you export could easily swallow up more than another 20...?

So best guess is by end of 2010, there should be 120ish in the UK and 80ish in rest of World: Target would be to apply for International status by July 2011.

Hope that gives a bit of a picture: Needless to say we are chuffed to bits with this early commitment and sales. But almost more exciting still, and what is so different about this boat is internationally - there is so much enthusiasm, and such potential.

Big rig aim was to get up to Phantom power overall, but our greater gunwhale width means you are hiking out a bit later for same weight helm. Small rig unfolded from that - ended up 1.8m smaller which equated to 15kgs lighter helm powered up at similar moment. We seem to have similar pace upwind in the light to a Phantom, but a well sailed 300 should be slightly quicker.

2 rig size rationale was based on evolving 2 fleets. I do not believe we should insist that certain weights sail one or other - but that will evolve to a great degree: My best guess is that 8.4m rig might be sailed by 65-95kg sailors depending on venue, confidence and skill, and 10.2m 80kg to 110kg, again depending on the variables. The big overlap is the reason why the Class rules should not restrict useage.

So how would it work in practice? club level - 2 handicaps recommended, take your choice  - opens - choose your rig prior to the event and stick with it: Likewise for a circuit series. From the first event I would guess we would all start together, and perhaps have both an overall and split results: As soon as the fleets are big enough, definitely 2 seperate starts, like Laser / Radial.

The uptake on RS100 internationaly is on a roll - so I would hope that all international events would go straight to 2 starts:

Event format is another interesting topic: standard RS events are 3 races a day for opens - 2 or 3 for big championships. I think 9er and MPS do 4 a day: We have all the options - also hearing Luca's thoughts, we could through in a long race or 2 at big events for double or +50% points for example?

Finally Class rules are being drafted at moment - in the ISAF format - and as soon as done we will put it out for owners views. They could be voted in officially towards the end of the year, when no doubt we will all know more.

I am definitely opting for the small rig. This went away from my initial 'well it's got to be the big rig hasn't it?' thought but it does seem in the RS100 case that the big rig is meant for bigger people (no offence to anyone!). Really appreciate that useful insight, which sort of confirms why I have
chosen the big rig - for the very same reasons as yourself !

Although I live on the coast I am primarily going to be sailing my 100 on
a tidal river estuary for summer evening club racing, which is most
usually exactly as you describe - patchy wind, fading evening breeze,
nip-and-tuck type sailing where generally I get mullered by Phantoms
and Solos.

For sailing on the sea at weekends (currently in a 49er and Vortex
Assymetric) I will either stick to the trapeze boats or get the smaller main.
Have not actually ever sailed a hiking boat yet, but it had dawned on me
that slogging upwind from Torquay to Brixham in a hiking boat probably
not going to be such an easy ride as in the Vortex or 49er !!!

Going to stick with the big rig but maybe get an 8.4 for more all-round.

Really what i am hoping for in the 100 is Phantom type light to medium
performance upwind and some fun (and no kneeling !!) downwind.
