James,

Blimey all this discussion about sail size has now got me quite concerned
!

Im not that heavy (85kg) but had assumed without any hesitation that the
big rig was the one for me - all the present comment is now making me
concerned about this choice !

Most dinghys I have sailed feel underpowered and I have usually found it
very frustrating watching Phantoms pulling away in the light to medium
whilst i am sitting dead-in-the-water.

Most of my sailing in the 100 is going to be in the force 1 to 3 range -
got trapeze boats for recreational sailing when the breeze is up. I am also
aware that it is a very sad fact that most dinghy races in the UK take place
in a F2 !!!

How does the 10.2 feel compared to a Phantom ?

Maybe I need both rigs and then decide ?

Thanks for the feedback James, you've more or less confirmed what I experienced in the prototypes although I never got the big rig de-powered enough to feel comfortable with. At 78kg I think the times I would use the big sail would be very limited indeed, needless to say I'm going for the 8.4, which I have to say, for me, made the boat feel a lot more "balanced". I think the analogy with the 300 boys and the 600 sailors taming their big rigs could lead some of the lighter guys to think they might do the same in the 100, some might, but when they get to the top mark the 300 /600 boys haven't got another 12.5 of sail to handle, bearaways, hoists and gybes in any breeze may have those guys wishing they'd be a little more conservative on their initial mainsail size choice. Your feedback is welcome and as you have somehow managed to blag the first boat you are now the fountain of all knowledge, and possibly the man to beat at the nats

Not surprised that the boat is barking dog slow when heeled. Look the chines and all that wing churning up the water! I'm surprised you didn't get turned hard a port and thrown. Can't have been that fast then. As for being overpowered with 96 Kg in the nuddy, I can only conclude that you'll need to be developing your 6-pack significantly if you want to go fast.

Ok if that is a 3-4 then I think the small rig will be enough to begin with! Because the boat is slower than the 700 the kite will have a lot more shape which hopefully will be good in the light stuff.  Seems to be very deep in that sort of wind though.  I really hope the 100 is going to be as easy to learn to sail as I imagine! The first time I sail will be the nationals so I want to be in control of the boat.  Only one way to find out I guess! I'm just regretting not getting my order in straight away, I was seriously thinking about it very early on but then decided to get to know the 700 a little better.  As it turned out I should have put my money down because its been so cold this winter that sailing really hasnt been top of my list.  Still I cant wait for the nationals now!

James. Getting overpowered with the main downwind is a different
issue. In a nudging 4 upwind did you find you could depower
sufficiently - oh and what is your starting weight ?

Looks like you had an awesome sail! The sails actually look very similar in size, I am wondering if I would be able to cope just as well with either one now... but then I am 16kg lighter than you and you seem to be taking off in a couple of the photos.  How windy was it in the gusts there?
