People keep referencing the 300 as an example of where one PY fits but in my experience it doesn't for handicap racing as any of the smaller rigs I have seen racing are never as competitive over a race series versus the bigger rig. That may be one reason for why there are so few small rigs used? |

The reason for a different PY is that RS are saying that 2 different rigs do perfrom differently so for alot of us that will be handicap racing more often that one design racing surely it makes sense to have the most fair handicap for the given rig. Yes I agree when everyones together its not important but for handicap racing I think if there is a difference then it should be reflected in PY. Cheers, Keith. |

I can't really understand why this is being discussed? Surely it should be owner preference with one rig change aloud in a year?! Its worked for the 300 for years. Having a PY within a class is just plane wrong, surely the whole point in having two rigs is so light and heavy guys compete against each other on a more even footing! Everyone should be on the same start line, sailing the same race! Why would anyone want to split the fleet?
As for two rigs like the 18ftr. That will never work, people wouldn't want to have to keep replacing two sails, the difference between the two sails isn't really enough to make that much difference and finally surely out and out sailing is much better then winning by rig choice?
I suspect in the long run everyone will be using the same rig, like with the 300's. |

Yeah, Rick´s right. Plus why not use the two rigs at the discretion of the
users? A rig for light sailing and/or heavier crew weights and one for lighter crew weights and/or heavy weather. The 18 footers do this with two different rigs. Edited by Slippery Jim |

I dunno why you seem to be over complicating it; just all race together off scratch and have just a single PY ... keep it simple.

I think the 100 will be a lot faster than the vareos on the water, as for handicap sailing they should in theory be the same, i expect however that the 100 will be better in lighter and medium winds, and the vareo will gain some of this back but i suspect not all of it when the breeze gets up

Yes the mast has a stump that you take on and off depending on what rig you use so it has extra fittings up further for the smaller mast and kite to be in the right place. Also the rig size for the smaller sail is smaller than the vareo which measures main sail is 8.8 sq meters compared to the 100s 8.4 and 100s kite is 12.5 vareos kite is 10 sq meters. Bring the windy weather i do hope we have some joint events as the vareos handicap is either 1038 or 1050 |

I dont feel quite as guilty for my steak and kidney pie and chips that i just had for tea now! Anyway, one other thing that just came into my head is how the kite halyard is changed from sailing the small rig to sailing the big rig? Are there just 2 attachments at the top of the mast? Because the kite is the same size and same hoist height on both just with less mast above it on the smaller rig will that make the smaller rig more efficient downwind too? The twist in the sail being lower down might improve the slot I am guessing? |
